Can't select UI, stuck in a frozen state

Basically whenever I press F to hide the UI, where you can select units and stuff, it wont let me de-select it. I'll be stuck in this sort of photo mode where I can't select any units or even do anything. The only solution I have is to alt-f4 every time, which is kind of annoying.
