Can you choose to place as a large piece a village in the developed territory?
The phrase p 140 isn't clear from the other side of the channel

A village can be large if compulsory. Otherwise the terrain table only allows 1 piece for a Village (i.e., small).

If the terrain type chosen by the player with initiative is "Developed" then that player must "choose"/place a village as his/her compulsory piece with an option that it could be of the larger size. At least IIRC!

Yes, only if it's compulsory.
I tend to like villages, no particular reason why that (vs other difficult terrain) other than I like to have some buildings on the table.
Interestingly at Shieldwall we did have a discussion on the terrain sequence laying; it does say the player with initiative places 'any' village. Since it then goes on to say 'his' when talking about other features for initiative player and the non-initiative player we wondered if it meant the initiative player gets to chose the non-initiative player's village. Both players felt this was perhaps harsh and further terrain instructions also show an ambiguous use of 'any' and 'his'.
But we did wonder if 'any' meant even the other player's pick or any of his own picks.

All correct. Cunningly designed so that:
1 You can only put one down at all if you are the player with the initiative (and in a terrain with one of course)
2. You can only geta large on in DEVELOPED as a compluasory item if you so choose - or put a smal one down and leave the enclosed field for the opponent

What do you mean by that ? Surely the opponent gets the enclosed field regardless ?

Bah, and I let 2 of my opponents without initiative place villages at the weekend.

(Although I threw a 6 and removed one of them, after they had deliberated long and hard where to put it).

Correct. Ignore that bit. You must if compulsory IIRC.

You sure about that?
If it's not compulsory, you are still only taking one piece (large) but it counts as two selections.

Absolutely!
Any large feature counts as 2 selections - unless it's compulsory. And no terrain choice allows for more than 1 village - so it always has to be a normal sized feature unless you are in Developed.

Yup.
You're allowed 4 selections.
Two selections are taken as one village, so you're not allowed to take
another village. You've got two more selections.

You are only allowed 1 village selection. Unless compulsary, a large feature counts as 2 selections. Therefore to get a large village, it must be compulsary.

This is correct.

Sorry to beat a dead (dying?) horse, but if I have the initiative and DO NOT choose the village; then there is no village?
My opponent would then have no compulsory piece, just his 2-4 optionals
Thanks,
John

If you have chosen Developed, you must select the Village - there is no other option.

ooops, sorry! Don't have my rules here.
If the village is an optional, then only the initiative player may choose it?
If the village is mandatory, the initiative player MUST choose it?
