German Strategy During Russian Winter

This is my first SP game where I increased the starting difficulty beyond balanced, giving the AI advantages. As Germany, for the first time I was unable to reach Moscow before the severe winter penalty struck in Jan. '42.

I don't want to retreat, but it looks like I'm going to get eaten up if I don't give some ground. Staying put is going to require me to use all my PP in resupplying units, as well as depleting man-power totals.

Is this the time for air assaults only?

For me, I use the opportunity if caught short to repair, upgrade etc etc. I prefer not to give ground but will if necessary, since the Germans can't afford to take as many casualties as the Russians can with their effectively endless manpower pool.

The effectiveness penalty hits on only the first turn of winter. Movement penalty is all five turns.

Does the Russian winter always begin on the same turn?

No it doesn't. There is a 25% chance (I think) that the winter will begin each month starting from October. If the winter hasn't arrived before then it will automatically arrive in February.

Is there anyway I can save Russia ?

Gabriel's (Axis) forces are near Perm, he had taken Moscow before the winter started. The Russian winter has just ended and I have a small force based around Perm. Gabriel's forces are all over the map and I should guess that they will try to encircle Perm.

Does Russia have any hope ?

Doesn't sound so. What year is it?

Can you stage an Allied invasion in France? Something to at least ease the pressure.

Has anyone ever recorded an Allied victory despite the loss of Russia? It'd seem to be a clincher I'd think as it would make liberating Paris/Rome impossible once the German player transfers those Eastern Front units back West.

I staged a mini Invasion of France in the end of 1941 to exactly ease the pressure on the Eastern Front but the whole force was wiped out.

Yes, when the invasion of Russia is completed, I guess there isn't much hope for any landings in France ! :-(

In my other game with Louis, winter has started in September 1941 ! Does that mean I get a efficiency penalty only in the next one turn ? Movement penalty is there for all 5 winter turns ?

Thanks.

Derek

To the OP. No - your Russia is done and your game is over. :( Gabriele plays a very strong Barbarossa as Germany.

I think that given a competent Soviet player and a competent Soviet defense strategy, that if Germany commits enough to have a shot at conquering Russia in 42 then Germany is over-committed and the western allies must invade somewhere in strength in '42. Preferably France but Italy or Denmark or southern France, or possibly even Albania are valid alternatives. Western Allies can't sit back and watch Germany throw the kitchen sink at Russia in '42 because that's what Germany must do to have a shot at conquering them.

Though, it was my first Barbarossa as Russia, I got steam-rolled by Gabriele. His blitz would have even put a smile on Hitlers face.
