I don´t quite understand this; shouldn´t SGs in a custom game have CR 4?

No, the main infantry SG (if the infantry centre isn't commanded by the CinC) has 8 - otherwise it would often be impossible for his command range to cover the whole infantry centre.

So different SG have different command ranges, depending on who they command?

The manual (section 10.1, page 56) says the following, but I've always believed that there's only C-in-C (with 8 CR) and SG (with 4 CR):
Command range varies with the command ability of the general. You can
see the command range for each of your generals by selecting his unit and
toggling on the Command Range display (see above). “Troop Commanders”
have a command range of 4 squares, “Field Commanders” 8 squares and
“Great Commanders” 12 squares.

How to know if a general is a Troop, Field, or Great Commander?

By looking at their command range.

Of course. But are they fixed and set prior to deployment and command allocation, or will they vary depending on which units (and unit types) that I put under their command?

It all depends on how your forces are deployed when you hit Accept in Force Selection.

If you have a cavalry reserve, the C-in-C will be assigned to that, and the infantry centre will get a range 8 SG. If not, the C-in-C will command the infantry centre.

All other SGs are range 4.

So the only way you can control it is to position a central cavalry reserve before completing force selection.

I don't think you will ever see a Great Commander in a Custom Battle (or Custom Campaign). They are only used by scenario designers in Epic Battles.

Thanks, Richard: that was really useful and good to know!

I seem to remember I had a few games with 2 Cavalry SGs R8. (CiC Infantry centre; very large games)
