Rear Rank Shot At ?

Sorry - I am on a roll now - so here's the next question.
This was a BHGS Challenge moment - my 8 base (4 rank deep) Swiss pike block fighting in melee with an opposing German pike block. A unit of Yorkist Pretender LB is around the flank of the Swiss, within LB range.
Can the rear ranks of the Pike block be shot at by the LB? Technically they are adding to the melee factors - but are they actually fighting in melee so cannot be shot at?
We didn't resolve the question in the game as we agreed to throw the missile dice and see if it mattered (which it didn't as the LB failed to hit) - so we moved on without calling the umpire for a ruling - but I'd be very interested in knowing the answer.
Not that it would have made any difference to the game or my appaulling overall weekends score - who said armies with lots of BGs (I had 16) were sure fired winners!
