I've started playing again. I'm looking at trying out different units etc. I've always done the He 111 path. Will the JU 88 be viable for the whole East Front Campaign? It costs quite a bit less which will help out with the soft cap. There's also the Do 17 path.

The Do17 gets a raw deal with its short range (less than the 109e which it outranged in real life). On the positive side, it's cheap to reinforce and overstrength, and the limited attack stats don't affect ammo stripping and neutralisation chances, so it can be useful as long as you have nearby airfields. Also you never run out of ammo (but only because fuel runs out first).
But since strat bombers gain experience very quickly, you might as well buy an he111 to start, add a ju88 later and then buy some new do217 in 41. The do17 is really for people using mods with slightly better fuel (me - 55 seems to be enough to make it worth using) or if you want a challenge and/or a slightly more authentic force (me most of the time).
