Err, yes and I should know.

Dave, I am reasonibly certain that even Hammy could write it correctly on a form. I also remember it being stated before to a comp organiser whose name escapes me for the moment...

What were your thoughts on Ralph the Timids version then Dave?

Hi all,
A very good turn out for the 2nd round with 12 teams in FOG, 10 Players/teams in DBMM and still 8 players in DBM, so DBMM and DBM are up on the 1st round at york and FOG is round about the same number of teams, looking forward to the next round which is in Derby on SUNDAY 14th June 2009 and remember to have FUN as well.

How many points per side for this event?

What were your thoughts on Ralph the Timids version then Dave?

It wasn't actually that bad. In the first game we played an Ottoman Turk army, who were left with very little option other than running away fast. We managed to corner them, but time ran out. They had about 9 BG's in a foot square in the corner of their deployment area We won 19-13 under the 32 point scoring system

In the game in the afternoon we played the Norse Irish, which was chock full of Unprotected, MF, Hvy Weapon guys.

We caved in their right flank and then had a huge ding-dong all down the line, which we (i.e. my partner) were in the process of winning until I started throwing dice. When you have 8 dice on evens, re-rolling 1's and 2's and you end up with one hit, you know it isn't going to be good

I was battering one unit, broke it, but on the same turn my opponent threw a double six and killed my general. This then pushed three previously steady BG's into two being disrupted and one being fragmented. Which collapsed our centre... On our right it was even worse. We lost 23-9 as we had done significant damage to the Mick's.

Bottom line - against Shooty Cav it is great. Against a solid wall of infantry, then you are going to struggle. I don't know, but I suspect it would struggle against massed Longbowmen - surprisingly, some of the best troops were the poor spearmen. They all had rear support and were in 10's. Our opponents seemed keen to attack them, but on both occasions the numbers told and they mashed their opponents.... Back to the Scots Common

The large blocks of poor troops led by generals were surprisingly tough.

Nice to see the usual wargamer standard of reporting though. No mention of the opponent's poor luck on the flank where you were winning.

Whatever, it was an interesting game. Initially it looked like a simple clash between two large undrilled mobs (in the normal sense of the word). However, the use of rear support, allocation of commanders, differing unit sizes, troop quality and terrain effects, meant there was plenty to be interested in as the two massive armies rumbled into contact. I think both sides got their tactics reasonably correct. The sudden collapse when the small units started to go was rather impressive (from our side anyway). The Irish looked done for and then it all turned very quickly.
