Unit Customization

One thing that would be interesting would be to add the idea of "Unit Customization" whereby each unit could have a small number (e.g., 1-3) things to customize it.
A very similar system to how the existing hero system works, except customization would influence the prestige costs (possibly slots) of the units. The attachments would not be "awarded" like heroes, but either be unlimited or a fixed number.
The customization could add attack, defense, movement, special bonus... Most of the things that existing heroes do OR special abilities that units have (all-terrain, bunker buster, etc.) OR starting campaign specials (e.g., tanks +1 mov & ability to cross minor rivers), but limited to individual units and not global

I like the idea of a Schürzen upgrade. Slap that on a tank for extra points into +Close Defense.
I think the major obstacle to such a system would be does it have visual components, because adding visual bits to potentially a huge variety of units is super complicated.
And what is the currency to perform upgrades. If it's prestige, many people have tons of prestige and will just upgrade everything. When everything is upgraded, nothing is upgraded. It's only non-upgraded units that are substandard in that case.
Who knows what the future updates and improvements will bring though.

I would not add visual changes to the units if modified. I probably would add a "*" or something to their text description to indicate they were modified...
If people have tons of prestige (usually), that IMHO indicates a need to relook at how the prestige system is working (or not working)...
Posted elsewhere, but consider making prestige more valuable and give a *lot* less of it, but making
a) regular refits during a scenario free b) elite refits after a scenario free
Then prestige is only needed for upgrades and elite refits in scenarios and people need a lot less of it... And the downside of running out is no longer game breaking...
