Hi, new player to the game, I'm quite enjoying it so far.
However, currently I am having an extremely difficult time playing the game at anything past sergeant. I've played quite a few strategy games over my time, and despite wanting to play at a higher difficulty, I'm already hitting roadblocks just within the first few scenarios of the campaign. The other issue is that I find sergeant wayyyy too easy, but anything above that proves too difficult.
Should I be feeling bad about playing at the easiest difficulty for my first playerthrough? Or is that fine?

playing at whatever feels comfortable.
I would recommend watching some videos of players that may garner tricks you may not have considered.
My channel has quite a few playthroughs of the game, but so do many others. Search the scenario after you have played it but think maybe could be played better to get ideas you may not be considering

I agree... play for yourself first and then watch a youtube AAR of this map, e.g. either goose_2, braccada, Soren Tjerry, Richard Martin
The forum also holds a lot of other general tips, e.g. how to use scouts, how to read the map, how to make a plan, what to deploy when, how and where to best use which units, how to build up experience, how to collect and spend prestige, etc.

Agreed. Playing at your own level is good. When you're ready you can try some other settings to suit your preferences.
I'll give one tip. Don't rush - you usually have more time than you think.

Me, i played the game at pretty much every difficulty settings. I think the default intended setting is colonel, which gives a good challenge without being too hard (You'll get there eventually, don't worry) However playing at general or field marshall or even the three special difficulty level after that is just tedious, and requires a lot of micro management and tinkering. And to top it off, doesn't rewards the player more for any harder difficulties. So imho, they aren't really worth it.

I beg to differ. Being able to beat it at the more difficult levels gives a level of satisfaction that is the greatest gaming experience I have ever had. Beating Afrika Korps at Double Rommel, and doing better than I ever did on Blind Rommel was the most rewarding experience I have ever had on a game. I am slogging through the Grand Campaign on Ultimate difficulty and yes every scenario requires an insane amount of micro management, but figuring out the puzzle of breaking each map is incredibly rewarding. For example, I am finished Storming Stalingrad, which was a great experience as I was able to break the map, with some well thought out planning and superb execution, I am about to start the same kind of thing at Stalingrad Docks. This makes each scenario super exciting and something that I am finding especially rewarding.
I understand that these higher difficulties are not for everyone, but the fact that they are available and on such an easily manipulative level, make this the greatest game I have ever played in my life ever. 5 years running and no end in sight of my enjoyment of this excellent game.

I hear you, but to each his own. I'd rather play other video games in the end (or build scale models). But that's me. Yes being meticulous and ingenious can allow you or anyone to achieve the mastery of the game.
I also want to point out that in this game the AI is particularly mediocre and never learn from his mistakes, which means we mostly know what to do once we went through all the missions a couple of times.

Agreed. if a player is skillfull and knows a scenario its a little boring playing even on higher difficulties.
So Goose maybe fancy a new tournament ?

I think this game is a numbers game in the end... if you put in a lot of hours (playing yourself and afterwards watching youtube) you can become really good at this game as the basic rules never change against the AI... and you will know most maps in great detail...

The replay value of the game is based on the difficulty you put into it. Nothing is quite like blind, and that is why the mods have raised the level of excitement. Loving BE

What I mean by loving BE and this discussion is the complexity of the map and the various things that are taking place all over the map, I find the level of ai difficulty greatly increased, as I am not sure at alkl what the ai will do on any given game. I think the replay of these mods could be off the charts.

Before i read this forum this game was more complex and more fun. after breaking down all mechanics it becomes routine i think. plus as mentioned above AI is not that great. for the most games i have played the key to success is understanding AI logic. If you know that + the composition of AI force there is actually not much real adventure left.

... apart from trying multiplayer against a skilled human player of course.
And/or a mod like the above mentioned BE (Battlefield: Europe)

McGuba....I am curious what is the history behind the little battlegroup that is plaguing me near the airfield near Stalingrad. The one with the loan T-34/40, the aa, the inf and that darn artillery.
They are really causing me a hassle, and I would love to read the thoughts with placing those buggers there.

I guess you mean Leningrad instead. Those units are mainly there because historically this area was never captured by the Germans so I thought it should be well defended. There was a big bulge on the Leningrad-Moscow highway which remained in Soviet hands throughout the war.
The bulge can be seen here in this map (from wikipedia) east of Novgorod and Demyansk in the north:

I don't know how ) But on the Sergeant of the unit can be counted 5, on the field Marshal, the same unit will already be from 12 units and above + stars in them will be 5, these will be real thugs ))) And what is the most game level of the game historical, Colonel ?
