Not sure if I can properly explain my situation. However, I will give it a try. When I first started playing I thought a player looked for their type of BG (Foot with light spear) and then look directly at the entry in right column (in this case a plus unless charging mounted shock troops). However, a friend of my argued that because the plus in the third column second row was not separated so therefore anything on the far right column related to everything on the left column when looking at the plus in the one giant single row (within the column. Technically that is how the chart should be read I think but when I looked on page 96. there were row separations in the + column.
So, do we look at the left column and only refer to the entry on the immediate right row and column?

Also if a knight attacked light foot with bows in impact and the knights had lances would this be a plus ++ for the knights?

I believe you were correct. They just didn't draw all the lines across. We had that confusion also, but have resolved that each line is distinct.

Yes they would be at ++.
