Multiplayer Down

If I try to start "Multiplayer" via PBEM++ or online, no matter if I choose "Steam" or "Slitherine", the game quotes "unknown error" and does not start.
Have you been previously able to play MP? Either way you should check whether your firewall may need to be unblocked for the game EXE.
