For those hoping for some naval action in the game, or a naval variant... it seems it can be done with 15mm figurines (using different rules of course)

Ram Speed, an old Milgamex ruleset was a lot of fun and very flexible point based ship/fleet designed system. It was simple and fast playing too.

there's this on steam:

but I haven't really played it much, it's production values are fairly low but it could be fun

NIce little game, indeed.
Just a precision : Mare Nostrum is a WEGO (both players simultaneously plan the actions first, then execute and view the turn resolution) while FOG2 is a IGOUGO (I play, then you play = 1 turn).
Two questions about naval integration/modding in FoG2 :
- Mixed battles (land battles + landing + bombing + sea battles) in FoG2 IGOUGO system ?
- Exporting/Importing FoGE naval battles ?

For those so inclined, you might check out Cyberboard which allows one to play traditional boardgames PBEM. Someone has prepared a gamebox for the old AH Trireme which one could use as a map and pieces for any naval miniature rules you want really. There are also a number of Ancient and Medieval gameboxes available which one could use a basis for FOG2 campaign.

The problem with Mare Nostrum is that it doesn't have an editor, only a few scenarios, one campaign, and very limited terrain to choose from. This makes it very difficult to simulate an ancient naval battle that doesn't fit what's in the box. It's the obvious candidate for a connection to FOG2 or FOG: E as it is sold by Slitherine. There's some great potential for Mare Nostrum 2 if somebody would be allowed to work on it..

I completely agree with you that professional ancient and medieval naval battle simulation games are still a vacancy at present, and I hope FOG2 can fill this vacancy to some extent in the future DLCs.

Mare Nostrvm is a valiant attempt at galley warfare and has a lot of good ideas, but some questionable design decisions. The biggest flaw is the inclusion of ships occupying half hexes. These are nearly impossible to ram or board. Also, speeds are a little fast for a WEGO game, making it hard to predict where a target ends up. Why didn't they use two-hex ship models ala Trireme? Hopefully a redesign and a graphics upgrade would deliver the game we all want.

Yup, this was also my main issue with it...I think I played two scenarios and haven't played since. You would think that this issue would have been flagged as a serious issue during beta testing...

Someday we will have a decent turn based naval game... the best one now is actually the tactical naval portion of the strategic Napoleonic game by Matrix, Crown of glory.. I would love to see a game about the Armada, Lepanto etc.

Never played Crown of Glory, but when Shogun II came out I knew Rome II would have great naval combat. Boy was I mistaken. A different house developed that and it was a mess. Shogun II was probably the last good Total War iteration. The world is crying out for a good pre-modern tactical/operational naval system maybe drawing on Mahan's principles. If it could integrate with a strategic game, I would be in quarantine heaven.

I've always been amazed that there has never been (AFAIK) a computer adaptation of the old AH board game Wooden Ships and Iron Men. I don't even like naval stuff but played a lot of that game back in my youth.

The has been. In fact, you can play it online at

There was an old Avalon Hill computer adaptation of WSIM. And was quite fun. Too bad Trireme never got the same treatment. Same author.
Karvon, are these computer games?

Youplay.it has a number of web-based multiplayer games. Wooden Ships and Iron Men is one that has, I think, a small but regular group playing. I play Blue Max, a WWI air combat game, there myself.

So shall I. I shall risk mentioning Ultimate Admiral age of sail in early access. Haven't played it yet, but looks great with landing parties and all. Maybe my next purchase.

So I took a look...apparently it implements simplified rules and does not allow, for instance, creating your own scenarios. That's a deal-breaker for me. Oh well...

Just checked. The 1996 WSIM computer game is available for free and works with Win 10. As I recall it is WEGO and pretty faithful to the board game. Graphics are a bit dated, but still good. Probably this first mp game I ever played. Very nice. Enjoy.
