Problem with Playing MHCEAT Gold on my Netbook - EeePC

Hi,

I have installed MHCEAT Gold version 1.12 on my EeePC 1000H laptop downloaded from your site. The specs of my Computer are :

Atom N270 Processor running at 1700Mz
Mobile Intel 945 Chipset
2 GB RAM
Windows XP Home Edition SP3 with all patches.

The normal Screen Resolution is 1024x600 but you can run the EeePC Laptop in 1024x768 mode.

When I run the game on my laptop in 1024x768 mode, the WW2 black & white game video will run but when it should go to the "Slitherine" splashscreen it goes to the desktop. The Java.exe file is running in processes and I can hear the sound-track but there is no Tab of the running game in my taskbar and I can't see anything on my screen.

I can only play this game when I attach a external monitor at 1024x768 then it plays perfectly if I put WINDOWMODE = 1 in the settings.txt file.

Any idea how I can play this on my EeePC without having an external monitor attached ? All other games which have a Min resolution of 1024x768 like "Hearts of Iron Doomsday" & "Civilization 3" play properly on the Laptop screen without an external Monitor.

Thanks in advance.

Derek

I think it may be that your laptop is emulating a 1024x768 mode by blending and resizing but does not actually display 768 pixels in height. The native resolution is the only real resolution that it can display. I've never heard of a screen being able to display a resolution higher than the native one so that is odd, but it is almost certainly the problem I'm afraid. It may be related to the way Java works if you can get other PC games to run. Maybe someone else with this type of setup has some ideas?

Yes, my EeePC 1000H is emulating 1024x768 mode by resizing. But the MSI Wind also is a Netbook with similar configurations and with a similar display resolution and it does play MHCEAT with a similar software emulation at 1024x768.

I am trying various permutations and combinations to make it work but haven't been successful as of yet.

I would imagine that it is some combination of drivers, Java, and the Eee emulation which are not playing well together. You could check whether there are newer video drivers out there?

Cheers

Even weirder...when I am on External Monitor & if I switch from external CRT to Laptop LCD , it works on the Laptop screen like normal !

Hi julyderek - did you get this running on the Eec on it's own, i.e. not attached to an external? I'm trying on a Samsung NC10 and getting exactly the same problem.

Cheers

Hi,

No, I haven't got it to work on my Netbook on its own. I've tried many fixes but it just doesn't work. Hopefully the developers will make a patch which will run on all Netbooks which have 1024x600 resolution but can emulate 1024x768 resolutions. I think with the millions of Netbooks sold, they ought to get this sorted out ASAP.

If you find some solution, do let me know.

Regards,
Derek

The min spec for the game is 1024x768 so I'm not sure how much we can do to help :(

Games like Civilization 3 and Hearts of Iron 2 which run on minimum specs of 1024x768 run on the Netbooks under 1024x768 simulated. I'm sure there must be a way for MHCEAW Gold to run similarly. Isn't there a way MHCEAW can be tested on a Netbook and program patched so that it can run on the 1024x768 mode of Netbooks ? There are Millions of Netbooks being sold so there is a HUGE market for MHCEAW.

BTW, there are two ways 1024x768 can be run on 1024x600 resolution. One is by scrolling and other by compressing. If something can be done, would be GREAT !

julyderek - no luck so far. Spent a good while trying different screen resolution changers (scrolling needed) and downscaling (compression) methods, with various combinations of both. Nothing tried provides a usable workaround. Towards the start of the thread you said CEaW works on the MSI Wind - do you know what was done to get it going?

Iain - no problem with the min spec being 1024 x 768; what I'm after is if somebody else has found a way of getting it to work on a netbook. Though I would think the ability to handle different resolutions and reducing the minimum resolution to cover netbooks would be greeted favourably by a lot of users. No idea of the work entailed  I see julyderek has dropped it on the CEAW 2 wishlist already.

Cheers

I read here on the Forums that a MSI Wind owner got it working on his machine. He was having some problems but it was working.

Yes, hope they can get it working on a Netbook. Would be great if I could run it on my EeePC without having to attach an external monitor.

Was Googling and there is this software called "Powerstrip". It seems it has umpteen options for adjusting your display. Will try it out and get back here.

Powerstrip has tweaks for DirectX 9 & 10. As this program is writting in Java it was useless. The only hope I see is the developers patch this to work on a Netbooks 1024x768 pseudo resolution.

Thanks for the info julyderek .... 3 strikes and it's out. Pretty much given up on trying to run the game on my NC10 - shame as I'm into the portability of the netbook at the moment :(

Will post here more details.
