What is your favorite MP scenario?

My favorite 1v1 scenario is Dubno - it's so straightforward. You beat the enemy when the enemy is beaten. And vice versa -- when your goose is cooked, you're done.

I have a Dubno nemesis whom I have never beaten, in at least 20 matches. Just like my buddy in high school -- played at least 50 chess matches and never beat him. But I am a better chess player for having played my friend, and -- he who shall go unnamed -- has made me a better OoB PvP player.

I wonder if it's the same guy who squished me over, and over, and over... again. But yeah Dubno is a good map for sure. At the moment I'm enamoured of The Russian Campaign because it's both vast (the Poland map by Erik is also huge) and balanced. Used to have a lot of fun with The Coral Sea.

I will try the Russian campaign but now I'm busy with Eriks Road to Moscow.

That's a lot of fun.

I like Dubno as well, but it's not really built for Tournament play, which is why I made Karelian Kesa, to put those two forces in a situation where I could create good tournament scoring :)

(Same with Raseiniai really, I like maps that actually promote and reward diverse unit lineups, esp tanks!)

I vaguely remember playing Karelian once and doing okay :) Played Road to Moscow as Germany and lost, heh. It feels so weird to not lose a single unit, destroy easily a hundred enemy units, and still not even come close to winning. Ran out of turns and nowhere near Moscow. Not even sure what I could do differently. Definite points for realism anyway.

I beat Erik on both sides at once when he was designing it,

It seemed leaning USSR though. We'll see what Brenmusik has to say when we're done. He's a solid player so we should get a good assessment. I'm playing the Soviet side.

Well done! Have you played the Poland one as well? I did with Parreigo as Poland and he didn't seem to have a very fun time ;) I've noticed times where people criticize Erik for not hewing closely enough to history though, so it's one of those can't please everyone situations I guess.

Just a small comment.
I have actually be told that my scenarios usually stick too close to history...

(The PzC-convertions is a different matter though, my scenarios stick close to the original designs).

Karis,
I did play Poland and the Polish side was like a 3-day ass whipping. I think I played it two or three times on both sides. It hews quite closely to the historical events. Even though it was hard playing the Poles, I had to hustle on the German side to get the win. I mean, historically, the bare facts are difficult to turn into an interesting game/story. So I think it's a good scenario but you should make a deal with your opponent to play both sides!

I played Road to Leningrad Soviet side, it was challenging but fun. Can't remember who my opponent was.

Erik,
I think your scenarios are very good wrt fealty to historical record. Now that I have my campaign (almost) behind me, I can explore your stuff even more, but I must say I really enjoy helping you test PvP. And that Road to Moscow episode was important to me because it was a major accomplishment for me. I really like your big-map PvP work. ("Road to" series especially)

Sorry for rambling but this new sub-forum is really fun. I was thinking about requesting something like it just last week!

Sometimes I feel like it would be fun to just utterly throw history out the window for certain maps. Say for example a US / Japan vs Germany / Russia situation. Don't get me wrong though, constructing the rationale alone would be tons of fun. Say the Japanese Prime Minister during the Taisho democracy wasn't assassinated, but Hitler was prior to the start of Operation Barbarrossa. And I've noticed whenever there's an "Invasion USA" situation, it's from the east. What about the south? I find a situation where places like Argentina and Brazil join the Axis after it cements a partnership with the USSR entirely plausible.

I don’t see Brazil joining the Axis. They were neutral, and freely traded with both sides. Only when they signed a trade deal with the US, and the German started torpedoing their merchants, did they join one side. I could perhaps see Argentina, but another issue arises. How would they get from Argentina to the US? Many other nations along the way were supporters of the Allies. In reality any such invasion would probably get bogged down in South or Central America, most certainly with an “American Expeditionary Force” fighting against the Axis as well.

Hmm, it is a stretch when you raise those concerns... Still South and Central America are hardly the biggest fans of the US, and seeing Europe consolidated by the Axis would definitely change some political calculations. Actually the thing which had me on the fence about Brazil is its large Japanese population. Let me think. Where there was support for the US, it was typically limited to government strongmen with little popular backing. Imagine German intelligence repeating what it did in the first world war with Russia, utilizing political dissidents to overthrow unfriendly regimes once again? In the event of a fortified alliance of convenience between the USSR and the Axis, the espionage capabilities would surely be formidable!
