Yes Dumbo, Dumboer and Dumboest are going to be sorely missed and their white painted wooden tusks. No wonder they were "pants"

Classical Division C

principesromanes (Hebrew 681-586 BC with Kushite Egyptian 727-656 BC allies) defeats rob123 (Gallic 300-101 BC with Samnite 355-272 BC allies) 47-15

The armies met in the hills, with some lower, gentler (only one square of rough) hills in the centre and steep, foreboding hills on the flanks (covered in rough and rough slopes). The Hebrew army lined up with chariots backed by archers in the centre and a few units on the flanks. The Gallic army was comprised primarily of close order warbands with some Samnite foot and loose order warbands on the flank. The cavalry, having nowhere to go, also deployed in the centre.

Unfortunately, the warbands couldn't make any headway against the chariots. Mind you, the warbands also didn't really care about the Hebrew arrows. The cavalry tried to push when one chariot disrupted on a fallback but unfortunately for the Gauls, the chariot rallied and the cavalry was quickly riddled with arrows. Meanwhile, the loose order warbands and Samnite foot were able to press on the flanks. The Hebrew army was able to redeploy to effectively fend off one flank attack while the other one delayed long enough to give the Hebrew army a victory.

This was a very difficult matchup for the Samnites, with the narrow battlefield and superior number of Hebrew units able to operate in the rough only making it worse. Well played.

Division C

cnzmur (Scots-Irish) defeats Asterix_von_TWC (Frankish) 66-52

I was behind in a very chaotic situation against the better Frankish warbands, then got lucky with some fragged units holding on long enough for a flank, and after that I was able to pull ahead and use my numbers.

Captain Savage Pyrrhic 280-275 with Samnite allies defeats frederico02 Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 216 with Samnite allies.

64:56

Nicely balanced set up. Some hills covered with a rough covered plateau on the right wing. A flat plain in the centre dominated by a low hill with scattered rough hills on the left. The Samnite allies from both sides took to the hills and there was a massive battle of the mediums on the right flank. I thought I had the better of it until my General died leading the first charge across the plateau. All was not lost though as I had enough troops on hand to sneak around the flank of the Carthaginian veteran spears. Attacked on all sides they eventually succumbed tot he phalanxes and Samnites. The rest of the centre was the phalanxes vs imitation legionaries and accompanying mediums. My elephant - rather then swinging the battle gave up after a few rounds and ran for the hills. The cavalry battle on the left wing was very chaotic. The Carthaginians had the better of it but failed to keep the Pyrrhic cavalry off their rear. Then again some of the Carthaginian cavalry got into the back of the Pyrrhic line. The score reflects the even balance of the battle and I suspect the only thing to separate the two armies were the inability of two Carthaginian Samnite units being unable to re-join the battle at the centre soon enough to influence the final skirmishes. The light units played an important part and both sides had they moments of glory.

That's my last battle in the Classical Division. Thanks to all my opponents. That was a lot of fun and it seems I have remembered most of the rules.
Just one correction: your opponent was Nosferatu, the rest of the post is accurate :-)

Division C

Vakarr (Thracian Roman client with Roman ally) narrowly defeats Mh504 (the same Roman army without allies) 60-57. Thrace will be free and the Republic restored!

I had only two superior legionary units while he had access to lots of them, plus the Praetorians, so I thought the only hope was to try to act historically - defeat him with a cloud of cavalry and light horse. He held the high ground mostly and pushed my infantry off it when I climbed onto the hill but the cloud of horses got into his flank. I held the lead throughout the game, though it narrowed as the game went on. There was one rough terrain square in the middle of his line that saved him from a worse result - the Thracians were unable to rout the legionary unit there with infantry or cavalry despite many attempts, until the last turn. Although it was disrupted early on, the cavalry charges were nullified by the terrain and the infantry was caught in the flank and thrown off it. The Praetorians couldn't be beaten and smashed their way through the line. However, there were sufficient non-superior troops in the army that I could attack to keep up my score and eventually win. The highlight of the game was a flank charge by my only warband unit with a general attached. They charged a legionary unit that was in combat and it just exploded, completely disappeared. Never seen the normally very resilient legionaries do that before.

N. B. I have issued challenges to keksoid and ggarynorman but neither have responded, so I'm not playing any games. My last challenge will be to Asterix_von_TWC.
