Previously when I have fought this army, it didn't do so well because the dart etc equipped infantry didn't have much effect if they charged. This game was very different, with their charges being very effective and my army was in a lot of trouble until my lone lancer unit got into the flank of some Roman infantry and started rolling up the units on the Roman right flank. This was just in the nick of time, as the Romans had broken through my line in the centre and were feeding cavalry through the gap. It helped that I have fought cataphracts so many times with my lesser armoured and equipped cavalry so I was able to hold off the Roman cavalry on the Roman right flank and even break through there with that one lancer unit.

Classic of Phalanxes vs the legions. The Roman came with their most experienced legions as the Adriatic covered one flank of the battlefield and narrowed the battle to essentially a flat plain. We just went straight at it. The phalanxes survived the initial clashes in almost every case. The more numerous reserves of Pyrus allowed for a few more flanks to be attacked and then once the first Roman elephant was scared away by some mercenary spearmen, then morale amongst the Romans seemed to crumble. Both cavalry wings seemed to neutralise each other but enough Pyrrhic light cav got through to start battering the rear positions. The combination was enough to force a victory. The attritional battle of the heavy infantry went to the Greeks this time as the Greeks had the numbers to survive and the impacts from the legions were lacking bite today. A very interesting matchup.

For all my opponents - I will be away for the next three weekends so response times will be slow. I will be putting tactics to the test on some battlefields and watching some Shakespeare.
