I intend to start the new round this week.

I've been making scenarios of some ancient battles I did not choose to do the first time around and rewriting some other to the present standard. So from time to time, we'll have a round of ancient battles.


ROUND 33: HEGEMONIES

The decades following Sparta's victory in the Peloponnesian War were to see her hegemony challenged then brought down by Thebes. Theban hegemony however proved to be short-lived. Waiting in the north was Macedon whose eventual hegemony was to spell the end of Greek independence.

Crazily, the whole Pelopponesian line surged forwards instead of backwards.

My windows laptop seems to have some sort of connectivity failure. I may have to buy a new one in order to play multiplayer.

A very close battle, where the Macedonians looked set to win, despite heroic resistance from a particularly brave tactical marker, but then everything switched around with a big points swing on the last but one turn. Thanks for the game Jim and a medal for the marker man

Sorry to hear about your laptop problem fogman. Hope you've been able to resolve it.

Within the limited scope on an inevitable slugfest, the main tactical choice for the Greeks is the balance between reinforcing the battle line and running away. Hear they mainly opted for running away as quickly as possible.
The battle seemed very close for most of the game before Alexander's death, closely followed by Antipater's and then it turned rapidly with the Macedonians suddenly losing a lot of points, so I think the key difference was the dice.

Sorry to everyone I went AWOL for a long while! Here are a whole bunch of results I don't think I've posted. Although these are gone from the server now, I scribbled down the numbers after each game.

I find the marker placement in Leuctra a bit odd. Fogman, I understand what you're doing with the Theban markers behind the Spartans - recreating the second line that the Spartans established after the collapse of their main phalanx fronted by the Spartiates.

But the problem is that the Spartans have to start withdrawing troops to get these markers from the beginning of the scenario. It's as if they know from the outset that their phalanx is doomed, and they will have to set up a second line. But they wouldn't have known that, would they?

In this case, I was overlapping the edges of the Spartan phalanx and pressing on its flanks. Edmund's necessary withdrawal of troops to take markers left him with insufficient to protect the flanks of the Spartiates. (It also helped that my markers proved stoic and didn't fall easily!)

I now have only one game outstanding - Leuctra with Jim. Looking forward to the new round!

Leuctra: the Spartans can't withdraw right away since they are entangled with some 'reaction time' markers. And I added a couple of Theban cavalry to make the process interesting.

I haven't heard from allendeuce. But I have lined up fedem as new player. I'll wait a few days.
