Beroia
Londo Byzantines 14/46 - allendeuce Pechenegs 50/48
The Pechenegs chose to retreat into the laager from the very start, but some of them got trapped in front of their wagons. To make matters worse, Byz got some lucky disruptions against the laager units. And then the Sardaukar, err I mean Varangians, floated down on their suspensor belts, and it was all over.
Nocera
Londo Rebels 45/52 - Ian Galactic Empire 42/41
This was very even until the last turn, in which the final wave of Rebel cavalry beat the weary and over-stretched Royalists. So the Rebel Alliance won - but yet again, Chewbacca missed out on a medal!
I'm about half-way through my final game of the round with Edmund.

ROUND 31: DYNASTIC ENTANGLEMENTS
States became more established and secured in the second millennium AD, making possible long distance trade and diplomatic contacts. With the Church frowning on consanguineous marriages, kings were looking farther afield for prestigious consorts. One extreme case was Henry I of France (r. 1031-1060) seeking and gaining the hand of Anna of Kiev. More typically, they were looking across the border for dynastic alliances. Such was the case of Scotland and England, and Hungary and Byzantium. The arrangement however often led to political interference and casus belli, as witnessed by the bloodletting at Northallerton and Sirmium.

Ian took a defensive approach with his horse archers dropping back and acting in a supporting role to the heavy foot wagon laager. As a result, the majority of the horse archers survived the carnage to fight another day. However, the 'Roman' armour protected them from the arrows and they wore down the laager and the weaker markers interspersed with them to grind out a win.
The key decision for the Pechnegs seems to be whether to send their horsemen forwards and use them as melee cavalry or to fall back and use them as horse archers. They are supposed to be horse archers and part of the laager counts as good defensive foot, so falling back looks logical. But the scenario makes a defensive win very difficult for the Pechnegs as it requires them to rout about 20 enemy units, whereas if they forget their bows and charge, they can pick up most of the 24 points on offer from the "tactical markers" and then rely on their swordsmen skill to counter the Byzantine armour.
Thanks for the game Ian.

Correct. The tactical markers are an indication of the tactics to follow to maximize points, and stick to the historical flow. The laager was always a last line of defense when everything else has collapsed, unlike the Hussite wagons that were part of the tactical set up. It’s always helpful to play a hot seat game (human self vs human self) to test out unusual tactics.

There are some games where you think you are going to lose and this is one where I thought I had lost until I read the battle report.
The Royalists took an early lead in the battle of the marker men, but when the cavalry got involved, the Rebels started to turn it round and looked like winning before all their troops arrived. Then it swung back again to the Royalists. Then two turns without changing the score, before the Royalists built up a solid lead. Then, the dice turned again until on their turn it was down to two die rolls, both of which went against the odds giving the Rebels an unlikely win.
Thanks for the game Paul. I was convinced you had won it!

Hi everyone! Am I the only one who's having problems logging into FOG? I haven't been able to log in for a couple of weeks. I either get an error message when I click on 'Multiplayer', or I get a login box that doesn't accept my longtime username and password.
I tried changing my network - using a cellphone as a wifi hotspot - but that didn't help. Could this be something to do with increased cyber attacks since the Ukraine invasion? Or has Slitherine finally pulled the plug on FOG 1? I hope not!
Cheers,
Paul.

I had code 57 for a few days. Had to retype my password in the slot (which is normally filled in). Write to slithering support if problem persists.

At the moment, I'm not even able to get to the login box. When I click on Multiplayer, I get "Sorry, could not connect. Reason: OK (Code 0)". I'll contact Slitherine support.

ROUND 32: AGAINST ALL ODDS
In the later 1170s, both Lombardy and the kingdom of Jerusalem were confronted with the invasion from a much stronger foe than they were, respectively emperor Frederick 'Barbarossa' and Saladin. Yet against all odds, they triumphed.
