The Dacians deployed deep within their deployment zone, between two woods and the Avars attacked. The Dacians put their warbands in front and the cavalry behind and this did help initially, but after a number of charges they were beyond the woods and fighting off cavalry coming from all directions. An initial charge by a Sarmatian heavy cavalry unit resulted in three further charges, with the unit ending up far in the Avar rear. Despite being surrounded, it fought long enough for support to arrive and maybe this was what set the Avars on the road to defeat, though it did often seem like the Avars couldn't lose. The resilience of the warbands paid off time and again, otherwise it would have been an Avar victory. On the last turn, for instance, a disrupted warband was charged in the rear twice by Avar archer cavalry, but both bounced off. The light artillery unit proved decisive in some of the shooting contests, where it disrupted the Avar cavalry in combination with Dacian light infantry shooting. The battle ended when an Avar lancer unit charged a warband and autobroke - the Dacians had been shooting at that unit or charging it since the start of the game. The Sarmatians had suffered similar fates, repeatedly rallying and shot up until auto breaking on the final charge.

Morat (French/Vikings) beat angusosborne Khorasanian/Ghaznavid: 56-31

Battlefield with lots of hills saw the French set up at the back - on about the only patch of open ground that they could find and invite the opposition on a long march to battle. Fierce contest where the French line frequently buckled was eventually decided by French horse emerging from the woods on both flanks to swing a hard fought infantry contest in the French favour.

Thanks to angusosborne for a tough battle - fought in a great spirit.
