The Burgundians placed archers at the bottom of the hill, ambushed the cavalry in the forest on the west side, and seized the heights on the east side with their infantry and routed the English. When the English cavalry tried to pass in front of the Burgundian archers, they were ambushed from the rear by the Burgundian cavalry.

Faced by a powerful cavalry attack by a better deployed army, the French withdrew their own cavalry to a defensive position amongst a area of rougth strewn terrain backed by high ground where their infantry were already positioned. This enabled them to meet and defeat their mounted foes decisively helped by some favourable combat results. At the same time their infantry colleagues were also able to take advantage of the constricted terrain to hold and successfully attack the enemy foot.

A strong attack in the left flank with a combination of Spanish troops and roman legions quickly broke through the phalanxes, fortunately faster than the also devastating attack in the other flank by the Macedonian cavalry and war elephants.
