Yeah I'm not so petty as to disparage anyone who contributed (apparently my own country of Canada had a sizeable navy at the time) but it really seems unfortunate how people disregard the Soviet role. It's true their record is more, ahem, "complicated" than that of the other allies but that hardly negates it. Back on the subject of movies, I was talking with some people I know about how great the Chernobyl series was on HBO, and wouldn't it be great if the people who made that did a film on the Eastern front.
Thinking of this idea, gave me chills. That series was so well done, and I could only hope that a decent mini series could be made on WW2. Band of Brothers comes to mind. Das Boot.
Imagine modern tech done well with a compelling story done centering on Stalingrad or Afrika.
Man that gets me excited.

Recently I watched a couple of rather new Russian WW2 movies on Mosfilm Film Archives which are on YouTube. The entire movies are there, and it's awesome.
Liberation is actually a 4-part full-length series (each part around 90 minutes) and it's pretty well done. The aerial scenes of entire battles are really impressive. They took much effort in making old Soviet tanks look like Panzer 4s, and effects are all real (no CG here!). They were also attentive of the actor's resemblance to real people, as there are scenes in which Stalin has conferences with his generals. Zhukov, Stalin, Vasilevsky, Konev... they REALLY look the part, which I thought was quite immersive. The story is going from 1941 right up to the Battle of Berlin and more or less follows the same characters. The story is also characterized by Russian cinema craft which is a very welcome change of same-old Hollywood crap, which means a lot of drama is focused on the humanity of the people, the sincere comradeship (as opposed to that all-powerful macho hollywood stereotype).
But the real favorite war moves are (in no particular order):
- Come and See
- The Ascent
- The Unknown Soldier (Finnish continuation war)
- Band of Brothers
- Stalingrad (1993)
- Das Boot
- Cross of Iron
- Lawrence of Arabia
...

But you probably didn't watch it carefully...
1. The whole series has 5 parts not 4
2. Begins in 1943, just before the Battle of Kursk (not 1941)
3. It's a very solid war movie and this is its main advantage, battle scenes are really on a good level, remembering that the movie was made in 1967-71
4. Speaking of humanism, I wouldn't exaggerate it, it's really just a war movie
