I realised that in the original announcement I showed each game lasting 2hrs 40 mins. Last year it was 2hr 30 mins.
We have changed the deployment distances to try and ensure a finish to the games. Unless anyone objects I propose we go back to 2hrs 30 mins games.
That will give the following starting times: -
1st Round 9.00am to 11.30am
15 minute break
2nd Round 11.45am to 2.15pm
15 minute break
3rd Round 2.30pm to 5.00pm
Prize giving
Car parking is tight as it is on public roads so it is advisable to get there early.
We are setting the tables up Saturday evening and will be there from about 8:00 am on Sunday morning.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available for £1 for the whole day
Most of the Oxford team will bring their own Sandwiches.
The local BP garage near the large roundabout above Wolvercote has a M&S as a shop so you can get sandwiches there. There is also a small Waitrose shop as part of the Services at the Peartree interchange at the A34 junction. In addition there is a small local shop in the village that is usually open at lunchtime.

On behalf of the Wessex Wargames Society contingents ("The Double Ones") - David Hewkin, Paul Marsh, and Brendan Morrissey - can I say a big thank you to all involved in organising this competition, and sorry we all had to dash off rather smartly at the end. All three of us had a great time, enjoyed our games, and - most importantly - learned from good players. You are obviously a friendly, welcoming bunch, who make "competition" a nice word.
(A special thank you to Alasdair Harley, who took time out to help the "special needs cavalry combat" on the "ace of clubs" table.)

And thank you from me...
Any chance of the final scores going up? I'm sure Will would love to see in print, he beat me at another competition

Thank you to everyone who organised today and who put up with me.
Thank you to three great opponents today. Tim, Tom and Andy.
7, 22, 1. Very happy with those scores and learned a huge amount extra about the game.
And as Nigel said: Beat him! 30 points.

Thanks to the Oxford folks for a fun day.
i had a better result than last year (i.e no heart attack) although I lost all three games. Thanks to Paddy, Keith and Pete for being sporting opponents.
I am not an experienced tournament player, and I found the time limits a bit pressurised, particularly when it came to planning my army deployment. In my view, initial deployment is one of the key elements of the game.
Can I suggest that for next year, there is a 20 minute deployment period, and that in the first turn of the game, the both players automatically get at least a double move with all units they wish to move (triple move if they are part of a legal Division move, whether mounted or not) , and that if that brings them within 6" of a deployed enemy unit, the enemy unit has the option to move back to just over 6" away. That way, the initial moves would still be speeded up, but the players would have a bit more time to plan their deployment.
Alternatively, have a 15 minute deployment period, but at the end of deployment, allow the players (non-initiative player first) to shift any of their units up to 6" from their starting locations.
Just my $0.02. Looking forward to seeing the final results to see how close I came to winning the wooden dice of duncedom.
Can you confirm that the event would be the same date next year (i.e last Sunday in April) so I have a chance of booking it in the diary at home before the High Priestess makes other plans for me.
regards
Andy

Alasdair continues to crash everything that gets in his way to reach the top. Well done Alasdair.
Big thank you for Nigel for providing the extra prizes of his new set of rules.
Andy, Hopefully we will be holding the competition at the same time next year. We just have to confirm the date with the Hall Secretary and ensure my boss does not decide we are going away. You were 4 points clear of Tom so no way were you coming bottom.

Bob's just sent me the following analysis of results
Average score per army:
43 - New Model
41 - Scots Covenanters
38 - Scots Royalists
33 - Paliamentarian
33 - Early ECW Royalist
30 - Late ECW Royalist
24 - Confederate Irish
I think if repeated next week would count as a Labour/SNP victory !

Tim,
I think that this week shows that the King had a decisive win at Edgehill rather than a draw and has marched onto London and taken it.

Just trying to write up my match reports... not sure if the formatting on this is skew-wiff, but I played Will in round 1. He is down as playing me and picking up 4 points (which may be correct..?), however I am down as playing Pete Simpson and getting 1 point out of that game.. I then go on to score 27 points in 3 games, to give me a final score of , erm, 35...
FWIW I played Ben in game 2, losing but I think not being broken, and Gordon in Game 3, losing my army for very little benefit

Just out of interest, did any other player face the same army as his own in all three games? (Late Royalists in my case.)

Tim,
Having checked the data the only mistake is that you should have been shown playing Will and game 1 and Pete played Alasdair.
All the scores are correct - 18 - 7 against Will, 8 - 12 against Ben and 9 - 16 against Gordon giving you a total score of 35.

In round one there were 5 games in which the same army played each other. In round two it was 2 and in round three 2 plus one game was between a Parliamentary army and a New Model Army.

But presumably nobody else faced the same army as his own in all three rounds - in my case it was Jerry Bray, Charles Masefield, and David Hewkin.
I should add that I'm not complaining, it was just a bit of an odd coincidence, that was all. Especially as my two practice games had both been against Parliamentarians!
