You should be able to find everything you need on the BHGS website:

Update :

We currently have only 8 places left in FoG Medieval, and 10 places left in FoG Ancients. At this stage we don't forsee being able to increase the allocations for either period, so if you are waiting to book for some reason, you'd better hurry !

Also if you wish to book accommodation via the University site please do so fairly soon, as they have other events on and are starting to run a little short on rooms.

Did we lose some places?

The numbers show just 3 tickets left for Medieval - but only 1 extra player?

Yep. The total number of tickets on offer across all the periods was more than the capacity of the venue, which would have been a little challenging - so I tidied it up a bit.

Almost - they generally do the "tidying up" only after you get to the airport though.... !

Army choice - I have entered the ancients comp - meaning choosing an army dated before 1066ad.
Does this mean that turning up with say Italo Norman dated 1045 and stacked with armoured knights would be frowned upon (ie is the date designed to discourage the use of knights)?

Nope. It means any army dated pre 1066 is perfectly acceptable and will be welcomed :D

As long as the knights allow the elephants to charge them in the rear they will be fine.

And the Normans can dismount anyway. But why would they bother?

and the fact that the bits of the army that aren't undrilled knights are not great in that time period. Still tempting though!

There's not a lot of other bits once you have 7 BG of knights

Tim, with regard to how the first round draw is done, for many yearswe've had it rigged so that seeded players can't play each other. I think JD did that originally in the days when we had massive fields. I never quite followed the logic but I think it was that the fileds were large enough that otherwise the winner would be the strong player who happened to come upon a middling player who'd had a soft draw.

Whatever the merits of that logic, I don't think it applies in a field of 32 players over 5/6 rounds. And it always had the downside that it was manifestly unfair to unseeded players. Isn't it time we ditched this?

And - Brucey bonus - it means one less thing for the organisers to sort out.

Kev and I have just had the same discussion.

A field of 32, and a system of "drop worst score" means seeding is not really worth doing, never mind the "it's one less thing for us to worry about" angle :-)

In Australia we generally use one of the following methods:
1. Anything which stuffs up Shaun's army choice
2. Ranking (refer below)
3. Nearest army date
4. Random draw

With the ranking option we rank by ELO then split into 2 sides, being 1 to 16, and 17 to 32 (for a pool of 32). # 1 plays #17, #2 plays 18 etc

The event wasn't seeded last year and it didn't seem to be a problem.

The only problem that I recall was the results being unpublished round by round and unfortunately they were recorded incorrectly - at least twice that we know of - which arguably skewed the draw and the results.

Interestingly, if we were to apply this year's scoring system to last year's results, there would be no change in the Ancients placings but in Medieval, Guillaume Fremont who was 3rd, would have won. He lost 5 to 20 in the first round which helped him to avoid most of the other top placed players - he only played 2 games vs someone who ended in the top 10. Result!

So throwing your first game could be a winning strategy? Discuss....
