Well I downloaded my copies onto iPad with no problems last week, loaded quickly, and i think it is great. Must be easily pleased, gauging by other peoples comments.

Ipad versions downloaded for both rules and Rise of Rome, and apart from a little choppiness when navigating the first could of pages working well for me. Would definitely like a search feature but other than that pleased with the product.

Having played with the iPad version of the rules for a few days now I am reasonably happy with the app - apart from the tendency to crash at random intervals which is irritating to say the least.

Personally I'm not bothered about the lack of a search feature (I find learning the rules means I tend to know where to look) but can see why others would like it, and on that basis it seems an odd omission. A bookmark feature would, however, be useful I expect as a short-cut way to those often used areas.

Yep that's something that would be useful. Bookmarks.

Downloaded Ipad version... I've ipad 2 and there are a lot of crash , especially when i try to navigate trough the interactive pages.

Yes, I'm surprised there is no bookmark feature, no highlighting feature, no notation feature - all of which are found in good ereaders such as kobo, ibook, etc. I really would have like the ability to add notes (e.g., clarifications, etc. from the forum). More or less all we have is an ability to navigate around.

And what about hot links....so that on page 7-1, where it reads "you can follow the system described in Appendix 4 at the back of the book" or 15-3 in the Cohesion Test table it has "Battle Group has rear support (See Glossary)" you can click and immediately read the referenced info.

That'd be useful with a back button type facility so you can go back to where you were.

Well I must say, my compressed wood pulp version is functioning fine. I think its pretty clear from yours and other reports this is pioneering new ground and is not fully as speed. I was becoming intrigued and looked at some ebook styles on a fiends ipad and could see fascinating things that could be done. It appears this is more of a fascinating beta concept than a game changer. Some one had to do this so we could get to the future versions, so I applaud that.

But I await the print version.

Iain - can you search for keywords in this new Digital ed.? Sounds like an iPad in use at a minis game would help in finding key rules faster if there is a way to search through the manual.

Like others I am divided on whether I will buy BOTH versions but I am sure going to pick up either the PC or the hard volume.

Absolutely. It makes me wonder why they didn't go with ebooks for the more common ereaders. But it's not my decision and I don't have all the facts.

Oops! Well that answers my question. I will stick with the hard copy then as unless you can search the volume it isn't worth having it on PC.

Downloaded the PC version of the new F0G 2.0 and just wanted to say what an excellent job you have done.

Not everyone will agree with your strategy but I think offering multiple digital platforms and a print on demand version works well. I say this as someone who cannot afford a tablet at the present time, but recognise the value of a digital version to easily receive updates and errata. I will buy the print on demand when it is released because a book is still a pretty cool technology.

Thank you for all your hard work and the energy and enthusiasm with which you have engaged with the wargames community over the last few months.

Comment from a gamer at my club yesterday - won't be pursuing FoG because of the release strategy. They don't have a pc (of any kind) so can't use the digital version of the rules, and print on demand would be too expensive (10p a sheet at a library). Several people offered to do the printing for him, but its now a matter of principle.

Something for Slitherine to consider in future. Not everyone has a computer.

Unsure if your facts are correct.

I thought print on demand was mentioned as hardback so I envisaged me making a payment and then a hardback copy of V2 was printed and sent to me.

I could be corrected though.

Print on demand is the print company prints the book when someone aks for it instead of holding stock.

JD doesn't take it to the library. Though he could probably do with the exercise

And as for someone printing it for him, that would get JD running. Many threads on theft of intellectual property/copyright, whatever, which that would certainly be.

Don't expect the expression of a well-thought out "point of principle" to wait on colleciton of boring old facts

List price yes (£25). But you can get it for £17.50 from Amazon. It's 176 pages (including the playsheets) but 1 of those is blank and a number of the others are just extraneous fluff like chapter headings

Difficult to comment too much without knowing the price of the POD version but I'll personally view it in terms of price per hour's use rather than price per page. I suspect that makes the v1 rulebook about three pence/cents per hour (ignoring the rule books that I bought with it). Compared to my other wargames purchases this is good value. But it does very much depend on how much you are likely to use the rules.

in terms of McNeil getting excercise from going to the library, I suppose it all depends on how close he can park.

Alan, I think you or your friend has misunderstood what 'print on demand' means. It's not 'print it yourself' like a PDF.
You order the book - and they print it for you and send it in the post.
Whether this is good value we won't know until we see the price for the printed version.
It's a shame they decided to use some strange e-reader which is lacking in search, bookmarks and the like.
PDF versions of rules work on any computer, can be easily optimised for tablets (e.g. the TooFatLardies rules which have a very slick navigation interface on the iPad), and can easily be printed as well. I guess worries about illegal copying precluded PDF, but those vendors using that format seem to be able to make a living.
