Scientists deliver new results:

The frontline in the east is more or less static. I loose a corps in the south, but reserves are nearby.

The focus of enemy activity seems now to be on Italy. Quite obviously, Frank will attempt to knock Italy out of the war. Following the inputs of my esteemed readers, I set up a defensive line also for Taranto. A new German infantry corps is build, and will be positioned on the Gustav line, freeing one more Italian corps.

I decide not to waste any points on the defense of Cagliari, as it doesn't count against the three-cities-captured-than-Italy-says-arrivederci-limit, but I move to garrisons near Florence in an attempt to build some defences on the coast line. Here's an overall view of the Italian front.

I placed that sub in order to block the Adriatic Sea while Ancona is without a garrison. I do know that a decisive naval assault would break that blockade, but what I wanted was to prevent a sneaky move by Frank.

Yeah I thought that was a good idea overall.

Frank has left his two northern most units in Italy exposed. I'm guessing you probably won't get a chance to cut off his supply by advancing your defensive line next turn. At the moment he only has three land units in Italy which isn't much in itself. Oh for a mech unit!

I was just thinking about this possibilty. Since the tech level of my infantry is quite good, I might get also a chance to damage his mech once across the river. On the other side, Frank has just send his move and announced that he killed my sub and damaged my last BB. So with the backdoor wide open I have to reconsider my options.

I guess those allied air units in the toe of Italy would have been the main culprit for you losing that sub. That'll stop a possible supply-cutting move as you would have needed the sub to stop Frank supplying the units from the sea. It was a bit of a dream really, with Allied air superiority, your sub was always going to be a sitting duck once it was found. Hopefully you have enough Italian strategic reserves to block any invasion from the east.

In Italy, I stage a limited counterattack southeast of Naples and manage to knock the infantry corps there down to three steps. The objective is to get another a hex between Naples and the enemy. Given that the allied bridgehead is still under seasupply, and the rough terrain, I hope that Frank will only be able to reinforce that corps by one step. If he can't retreat it, it should be gone next turn. He is landing still another mech, but I am now confident that my line will hold. I buy two other garrisons along with the two infantry corps that have been raised last turn, and a German corps takes position on the Gustav line.

In the east, I loose an infantry corps and destroy a mech; after long months the Luftwaffe shows up again. I reinforce and upgrade a lot of units. With over 6 million casualties maybe even the Red Army has some problems after all.

Scientist have made some more progress: I reach armour level 4, and the Italians get Fixed Defenses Level 2. I upgrade and reinforce the Luftwaffe fighters defending the Reich, and buy three garrisons with the rest of my PPs, which will be deployed in France or on the Westwall; an invasion of France is surely imminent, and I have to be prepared.

A question at the end: research in organization is good for what?

Troop Effectiveness. If you check the updated manual (link posted below) you'll see what the tech upgrades do.
