Celeborn wrote: Tue Nov 22, 2022 12:29 am I'd like to think I learned a few things about how to size up a scenario after completely missing the "St Lo Gambit" After the debacle of the final scenario I will be lucky to finish fifth and certainly feel like I should have placed lower.

On a whiny note I will say that I don't like scenarios where ahistorical para drops can make such a difference but I suspect most others like the opportunities they present; victory does typically favor the bold...
I think Paradrops are very risky and hard to justify. There are just too many ways to defend against one if the transport planes are sighted. Seldom is there a path that keeps the planes hidden until the last moment. I have been successful once but it was nerve wracking the whole time.
We do try to design maps now so that it's hard to set up massed paradrops at the start. I don't want to take them away entirely though as they do present an interesting way of playing!

They are an expensive commitment though. 4CP that is very vulnerable in the air and is out of the action for several turns (and so can't help with the main offensive) is certainly a risk which I'm certainly not sure is always worth taking...

for the second time in a tournament, my opponent does not finish the scenario... that's a record for me... :(

Despite the St.Lo-debacle I enjoyed this tournament as well.

Airborne? Like that dastardly trick @AdmiralYamamoto played on me :)
I've just talked to the other player and yes, it was a build up then mass drop of paratroops. Dastardly indeed!

Personally, it feels like that should always be defendable against (either by pushing a rapid assault against your opponents depleted forces) or disbanding and redeploying forces back at your bases once you see the aircraft (which should really be 2 turns before they can land). But I guess that it can be highly effective if people do it well.. I'm guessing rth must have captured both bases simultaneously or something to get that score.... I'll have to go and do some testing!

p.s. It is very much something I expect someone to try in Cobra....
Based on this message, I was sure that 90% will make the paradrops. And I was sure that my opponent is waiting that, so I had 4 paratroopers and B-29 for the mission. Needless to say that my front line nearly collapsed.

On the other hand, some of my German units got few off days in the villages..

I enjoyed it too. Let's do another!
I had a bad go on the last match, but it was still fun overall.

Why my points are reduced after the end of the last scenario?
I mean, I was over 220 and now just 180 :|

Hmm, that looks like a nasty bug. You should never have your points reduced like that... I'll talk to the team to figure it out and restore your record

Yeah, not that I keep track of all the points of all the best players but I noticed this too and thought it was 'strange'. Great tournament, a shame I couldn't end up in the top 10. I'll try harder and drink less next tournament...

Last score I noted/noticed from Blondus in round 3 was 272 points, he just pushed me off place 11 at that time with 1 point more overall than I had reached.

With all the talk about paratroops it would seem that Allies Victorious should occasion a para-themed tournament. This would of course feature:

1) Normandy (incl Pegasus Bridge)
2) Market-Garden / Nijmegen
3) Market-Garden / Arnhem

What would make it really interesting is allowing the Allied side some leeway in where to drop a la Erik's awesome M-G scenarios.

thanks pupski.
it's frustrating for the second time in a tournament to get close the the main goal (1 square close) and your opponent doesn't finish playing

Yes Blondus, you were very unlucky with opponents not finishing. You probably would have had the top score in round 3 if you had one more turn.

I also think you got short changed in round 2. I feel you should have gotten 90 points per game if your opponent did not take enough turns for your to do so through combat.

We're working on it.

You've helped us tracked down a nasty bug in the system. I'll update when they've fixed it and your score

Don’t really need a tournament score to tell me Blondus counts among the OOB elite
