Great game Rob - thanks. I had Rob on the brink of defeat early in the game but he managed to keep rallying
enough to stay in the fight. The score then became close for most of the game until it ended in a draw.

Ostrogothic lancers did very well against the poorer equipped sub-Roman legions they were fighting. GG!

Regular Division 2
rs2excelsior (Roman 379-424 AD) beat Scorched (Thracian (Triballi) 700-351 BC) 61-59
The late Romans had an incredibly close fight, as the scores indicate. The fighting hinged around a patch of rough ground over on the right side of the map, where my auxilia palatina fought the Thracian spearmen and massed peltasts. In the center my Roman lancers met the Thracian noble cavalry, who put up an extremely tough fight - one of the noble cav units went 1v3 against my better armored cavalry for an exceptionally long time - got disrupted, rallied back up to steady, dropped back to disrupted, then refused to drop any further. They held out long enough for another group of Thracian mediums to engage my cavalry while they were stuck in combat, and only gave way when they hit the autobreak threshold. By the time my own heavy infantry could get around to support them my cav had been pretty badly mauled. I did win the fight in the rough ground, but it was bloody. By the end of it we were both scrambling for points, trying to gang up on and flank isolated units. The lead swapped several times near the end, and the masses of Thracian light infantry and cavalry managed to cause problems - I actually went over the 60% threshold first, but a lucky rally by some limitanei put me back in the fight. It kept going a couple turns after that until I managed to crack a few Thracian units in the same turn, and despite one more Thracian unit rallying it wasn't enough to pull them back under 60%.
The battlefield at the end:

I'll echo my opponent's sentiments - I think this is one of the closest games I've ever fought. Very well played, looking forward to seeing you again!

Elamite archers did as much damage as they could, but could not hold up to the heavy chariots and superior infantry of Cyprus.

Report on battles vs Deeter
Captain Savage(Cypriot) defeated Deeter (Roman) 61:32
Deeter (Cypriot) defeated Captain Savage (Roman) 43:14
The games turned out to be almost identical The Cypriots had a low hill in their centre A very steep plateau on their left covered in rough ground and a small hill and a marsh on the right. Both battles were largely won by the superior numbers and of medium Phoenicians who swarmed the plateau and drove back or flanked the Romans. Lots of heavy chariot charges finished the deal. Deeter had them on the right flank repeatedly attacking the legions in the centre and I had mine on the left facing Triarii who were shot to death by archers on the steep slopes of the Plateau. Honourable mention must go to the skirmishers who fought long and hard in marshes and hills. Astonishingly one unit of Fragmented Phoenicians, on Deeters side, lasted 5 turns without breaking. They were fighting on a difficult slope and passed every single morale check. Do not fight on difficult slopes! Also a top tip - don't let your general die can cause an entire flank to collapse.
Great games. Cypriots Rule!

And Romans drool. I would typify the terrain more as a valley of death! Thanks for the game.
