harveylh - Andalusian 756-1049AD defeats Nosy_Rat (Khorasanian 821-1003 AD with Abbasid 815-835 AD allies), 60-56.
Tough, tough game. On a fairly open battlefield, both armies deployed more cavalry than foot. The battle surged back and forth with both sides ahead at different points. As usual, Nosy_Rat’s horse archers were deadly but the Andalusian lancers successfully counterattacked. In the end, the game largely came down to five Khorasanian infantry attacking four Andalusian infantry and the Andalusian infantry barely held on. More luck than skill helped the Andalusians at the end. The game ended on the next to last turn and could have easily been a draw or Khorasanian victory. Good game!

Round 3
Morbio (Roman 197-284 AD with Arab 312 BC - 299 AD ally) defeated XLegione (Kingdom of Soissons 461 - 486 AD), 64% - 46%
The Kingdom had the advantage on their left flank and the right was an advantage to the Romans, the centre left was reasonably even, but maybe slightly in favour of the Kingdom's troops because of numerical superiority. The start was a repeat of round 2 for the Romans... Once again good start during the skirmish phase, which was again clawed back and a small lead to Kingdom of Soissons, then the Roman cavalry of the Kingdom right was mostly either beaten or driven from the field and without their threat the Kingdom troops turned the centre-left to their favour and it was soon 40 - 15 and the Kingdom was offering commiserations to the defeated Roman general, defeated providing no units rallied...
... but one auxiliary unit did! The Roman leader stated that this would need to be a legendary comeback. The Romans, who had gained significant superiority on the Kingdom left, managed to wipe out the remaining enemy on that side and begin to regroup to defend the the Kingdom's push to the left. Inspired by the auxiliary rally a cavalry unit rallied, then over successive turns the Sagittarii, then the superior legion, lancers and a the superior legion. Once rallied, their discipline told and they addressed their formations and mostly became steady providing a threat to the Kingdom's left and right. Word must have carried far because light horse returned to help with the battle and soon the battle was level, but the Romans had a better position and superior quality even if outnumbered. The quality told and the Kingdom's troops slowly gave way and as dusk fell the Romans were victorious.
Clearly, prayers to Fortuna, Mars and Mithras were answered and the legendary comeback was delivered. The Kingdom's general was beginning to wonder if the pacifist Christ was really the right god for battle!
My best wishes and sympathy to XLegione who played well and deserved better.

It was an incredible battle, I have never played a battle like this. The quality made the difference and my mate praied a lot the Gods that gave him all the necessary support, probably he rallied 6 units.... that rushed in the woods and had time to rally without any problem
Anyway, honor to the winner!
See you soon on the battlefield!
Ciao

Round 3
Macedonczyk (Arab Conquest 638-684 AD) defeats Karvon (Arab Conquest 629-637 AD) 44:10
Civil war with a big number of veteran spearmans.
I was lucky with the map. There was a big hill on my side that I'm defending. The enemy tried to circle me and I fired at him at the time.

Quarter-final draw preview
We are getting to the sharp end of the competition now with just 8 players left in the tournament (once the Aetius39 v Questar17 match is resolved). The big match in the third round saw a titanic clash won narrowly by harveylh against Nosy_Rat, who was my choice to win the tournament. I think now that harveylh and klayeckles are joint favourites, but we also have these two relatively unknown players who did so well in the FOG2DL last time left in the draw - Macedonczyk and ConstantinIX. Then there are 3 players who have worked their way up through the divisions of the FOG2DL to reach the A divisions namely Morbio, nyczar and Schweetness101. Like harveylh, Schweetness101 is using the very dangerous Andalusian army. And finally we have the 2 outsiders who are still playing. Questar17 has been making steady progress in the FOG2DL but has not reached the A division yet, while Aetius39 is a new player who is doing very well in his first tournament.

Pete, thanks for the interesting analysis. And I agree with you as I also thought Nosy_Rat would win this tourney. Hopefully klayeckles and I will meet in the finals assuming we win our next games and not this round.

Round 3
Questar17 (Pontic 110-85 BC) beats Aetius39 (Ptolemaic 166-56BC) 53:22
Enjoyable clash of hellenic armies on almost plain map, the result was determined by Aetius39's extremely bad dice rolls chain
Thank you for the game and chat
