Another option I just thought of hex the map use a Warhammer historical type of revenue stream let people pick a country then play it from there so one or two Rome, 1 Dacia, 1 Gaul etc etc and that should be fun to....

Just an idea

Good comments all, guys, and I thank you for taking the time to make them. I've PM'ed or emailed some of you separately. The main question - whether to start over -- has I think been answered; there's no point in doing that until we have workable Senate rules in place. I think we can make some adjustments to the historical situation currently being played out to give Rome a bit of relief and keep things moving.... stay tuned for that. I do think we'll need to keep Dictator Julius Firmusofpurpus in place for a while.... :)

Best,

Tim

The Mars Temple Fund...

Image
Senator Fattus Adiposus here again for the Mars Temple funding drive. Only four of you have so far contributed to the construction of this noble house of worship. So, we're taking a lesson from the American televangelists and starting an Outreach telethon to encourage the rest of you to contribute! With Rome facing defeat on every front, we can't delay! Ensuring that the god Mars is favorably disposed toward Rome is surely our best hope in this dark hour. So, Brethren, open your purses!

YOUR FREE GIFT

Top contributors will receive a chance to execute a live Gaulish prisoner under the supervision of Rome's most glamorous gladiator, Maximus Malefactor! What a great photo opportunity for you and the kids. Lesser prizes include a chance for your toddler to suckle from a live she-wolf at the Romulus and Remus Petting Zoo! That'll put the fighting spirit into Rome's next generation! Even those who can contribute only a widow's mite to our funding drive will not be overlooked. They'll receive a vial of dried Gaulish blood. Just add water, stir, and pour it out as a libation to the god Mars! He'll thank you for it, and so will Rome!

So, friends and brethren, call today! Operators are standing by.

For the record,I was/am perfectly happy with the slightly chaotic nature of the role play, and the Deus ex machina events like the arrival of the Dictator. Once points were converted to money, the basic mechanics made sense.

Senator Turk Donates 5 points/coins to the Temple of Mars. May the Gods shine on the Legions of Rome and grant us victory in our battles. Fellow Romans now is the time to seek favour from Mars the god of War. Perrhaps a goat should be sacraficed and its entrails studied to see what awaits us.

another in a seemingly endless series of disasters against the Gaulic horde!

Time for a change of scenery for 12th legion, perhaps some time in Egypt? I officially tender my request for transfer to the senate.

Obviously not good enough the Turks incursion into Dacia was thwarted with ease as recompense for his disgrace I agreed to rematch in reverse currently at 10/30 for Rome, 29/41 for Dacia

... Have a nice night Turk and hopefully the dice continue the same way tomorrow although mine have been pretty bad

Yes the Legion lost to the dacians 31/30 to 30/39 not a disgrace by any means but a loss just the same    Now in reverse its 31/41 to 16/30 so far and with the way the dice have been anything can happen  I believe Rome needs to have some good Cavalry allies to help counter these Sarmatian Wildmen.

Can we have an update to whats going on with the COTR as its a great tournament in my opinion and would like to see what we have all decided

A Message from your Tournament Organizer...

Guys, after listening to your suggestions and trying to improve the rules I've come to the conclusion that any set of rules beyond the bare minimum will require a degree of attention from players, and work from me, that is not reasonable to expect. After talking it over further with Klaus, the best option seems to be a sort of simplified "Risk" version, where the Senate is discarded and the goal of the Roman players will be to conquer the map and then fight it out in a Civil War to decide who is the First Man in Rome. The goal for the Barbarians will be of course to capture Rome itself. Any Roman player who is defeated loses his chance to become The First Man in Rome (but can still play as a barbarian and in special scenarios on either side). We have the right number of players at this point for this sort of match. The Temple of Fortune and Senator Adiposus (and others) will operate to provide randomizing events and keep the game somewhat balanced. Money, factions, attributes, even the Senate, are all too uncertain and trying to get them to work will wear us all out too quickly. I'm already pretty tired.

A tentative sketch of these rules can be found at the link below. Add your own comments and suggestions to the document if you like; you all have edit permission.

I doubt that this scheme will have much appeal but let me know your feelings. If it's OK we can proceed. If not we'll have to end this thing unless I get an epiphany on how to make it work.

Best

Tim

My own feeling is its better to reach a conclusive end game ( as you described above) rather than try to wing it.
Of course this means Im likly to be knocked out, as my battle with your Sertorius rebels has gone sour

yet to read the rules but as the Talonus Undierippius of Dacia we thwarted the Romans now as Rexus Hurleius of Rome I am proud to announce I have driven the Turk Dacian dogs back (with no cav allies! ) 44/41 to 25/30 for Rome hurrah!

Okay just read the rules and that looks like fun, could I ask though (providing he agree's) Turk loves playing Dacian's could we swap and he play his beloved barbar's and i'll carry on taking the sword to the heathen, assumming the above Roman victory (at 400pts with 3 generals no less!) counts of course :)

Rex are you sure you would like me to be the Dacian commander :P This ofcoarse is up to Tim but im ok with that.I will Turkatis the Merciless

Oh almost forgot i won my second battle in the slave war with Tiavals Turk1964(Romans)30/32 toTiavals(Slaves)59/59. We are now in the process of 3rd game where rolls are reversed and Tiavals is the Romans and i am Sparticus

Friends, Romans, Potential Enemies

Woe, Woe & Thrice Woe ! These are cries to be heard from the Allobroges, as once again they have come off second best to the Glorious 14th. As a great senator once said " They came on in the same old way & we defeated them in the same old way". Once again, the sneaky Gauls tried to get round our flanks, but were bravely held off by cavalry & support. Meanwhile, yours truly led the advance, and after a bit of a tussle & cries of "Don't be caught by the Gaulies" the itinerant band was seen off once more : 14th Gemina 19/31 - Allobroges 45/45

Tim, any chance of "pinging" the rules, as I have tried a couple of times to look at them on Google Docs, but without success.

Hi Martog:

Note to all: Martog is the only victor over the Allobroges in the current round! He's beaten me twice now. Unfortunately, in the 'best of five" round that we had going, 1 win was not enough to avert another Gallic conquest. The overall result there was 4-1. Fortunately we're in the process of changing the rules, however, so Rome can hang on to Gallia Ciasalpina for now at least.

Martog, you should be able to access the Google doc. Here's the link again. Try it again. Please note that you have edit permission, so write whatever you want and we'll try to cobble together a new set of working rules. I really would like to hear from more people before determining if we are really in a position to proceed or if we should just shut the thing down now.

On second thought, why deny the Gauls their right of conquest? D'oh. Let Gallia Cisalpina fall per the previous rules. That will set up a Gallic invasion of Italy proper and a final battle for Rome itself. If the Gauls win, that will bring the tournament to a suitable and timely conclusion.

I suggest Martog be the Defender of Rome. He's proven best able to defeat the Gauls. Fair enough?

Best,

Tim
