Carthage tears itself open in civil war (if ever war can be civil!)

The battlefield was fairly clear with a couple of villages a small wood on Italian expeditionary forces (IEF) right and a patch of rough ground on the Spanish vacationing force's (SVF) right.

Most of both sides cavalry drew up on the side of the small wood and glared menacing at each other, the Samnites and their Scutarii pals made b line for the familiarity of the rough ground. Whilst their Spanish opposition counterparts with their spear wielding masters drew up with their big grey pets opposite the IEF's veteran spearmen, counterfeit legions and their lonely pet

well the SVF cavalry pushed hard, ably assisted by one of their elephant pets, quaking the IEF's horsemen fell back in all directions.

The tussle in the centre more evenly matched first the IEF's lone elephant pushed through then the other SVF elephant burst through the IEF lines chasing the scattering foe into the distance.

Slowly the quality of the IEF's infantry began to tell and their elephant returned to help from behind the enemies line.

over by the rough ground the heroically veteran IEF Samnites and their CinC held of multiple enemy until, eventually succumbing. Critically this bought enough time for their fellows and scutarii pals to win the day in the rough and on the far side of it, hurling themselves into the flanks of the hard pressed SVF who, inevitably were overwhelmed.

Back at the cavalry wing the remaining IEF cavalry supported by their veteran spearman and crusty, if counterfeit legions with their returning elephant began to turn the tables on the other wing, as the hard fighting SVF troops began to recognise the day would not be theirs!

vakarr Thracian (Roman Client) 50BC - 46AD with Roman allies defeated Indibil Byzantine 551-578AD w Lombard 570-649AD allies 60 - 40

A tough opponent for the Thracians, lots of top quality cavalry backed by a few good infantry. Crucially, he had very few medium infantry. However, he managed to deploy his infantry perfectly, with a line of massed bows on top of a hill supported by light infantry bows on the level below them. His cavalry strung out right across the rest of the table. The terrain on my side of the table was pretty clear. The Byzantine half of the table had a hilly area on his right and a mostly clear plain on his left. The most important feature was a disordering stream that ran right across the middle of the table.

The Thracians massed in two ranks of infantry units facing the hills and put nearly all their cavalry on their right flank, facing the open plain and the stream. Although the Byzantine firepower on the hill was ferocious, the Thracians were able to counter it with artillery fire and a huge contingent of Thracian light infantry. The Byzantine right flank was soon outflanked but the stream ran along the bottom of the hills so it made it hard for the Thracians to get out of it and up the hills. Meanwhile the Byzantine cavalry was called in from the other flank and began pushing in the Thracian right flank. The first and almost the last massed charge of the Thracian cavalry was completely unsuccessful, with the Byzantine horse archers of all types successfully evading it, then shooting up the Thracians on subsequent turns. Fortunately, the stream kept giving the Byzantine cavalry trouble and the Roman Legionaries proved up to their task of repeatedly throwing back Byzantine cavalry charges. The stream provided a lot of trouble for the legionaries, who were badly affected by it as they struggled to get across and up the hills, but it was more trouble for the cavalry that tried to stop them.

Eventually, the Byzantine infantry was completely wiped out. The Byzantine cavalry caved in the Thracian right flank and reached the central Thracian artillery position on a hill but were thrown back in the nick of time. A great game that showed the strengths of both armies and also how fearsome the Byzantine cavalry can be, especially when deployed in such numbers. I was lucky the Byzantine army decided to contest the hills, as that was somewhere my infantry had a chance, despite having only small patches of rough terrain.

a chess match battle with the spartans having a slight edge in the melee and missile battles, but the thracians using superior cav and a huge flotilla of LC to harass the spartan flanks and rear. the battlefield had plenty of cover, and the lighter thracians were reluctant to leave the safety of the woods and rough, and the spartans took command of open--leaving the bulk of the battle a stand-off in the middle with the action on the flanks. Spartans seemed to have a slight edge through much of the fight--winning on one flank with a woodland battle where spartan LF took control. Thracians turned the other flank, and the LC and cav there ate away at the spartans--finally getting some breakthroughs and flank attacks. as night fell the thracians tied it up, and with another hour or two--who knows. it will have to be another day.

I'm not sure how I won this battle. I had my cavalry covering both wings with my center composed of Galatians on the left and phalanxes on the right. Thorakitii covered some broken ground to the right of the pikes and several units of thuriophoroi were set to provide reserves for the Galatians and phalanxes. Two elephants lurked behind the battleline to avoid missile fire. As the legions advanced their massive cavalry wings moved to outflank the Macedonian cavalry, which fell back to avoid being surrounded. The thuriophoroi moved to cover the gap growing between the left-wing cavalry and the Galatians. The elephants moved to join the Thorakitii and support the right-wing cavalry.

As the two wings engaged the legions reached the Galatians and phalanxes. At first both lines held but then a cohort being led by a Roman general broke the left most phalanx and advancing into the gap turned on the next phalanx and rolled up the line. Of the four phalanxes only the phalanx on the far right held. The Macedonian right-wing cavalry supported by the Thorakitii, and elephants eventually defeated the Roman cavalry but were spread far and wide by the pursuit and had to reform. The Galatians after an extended battle broke through the Roman line and were able to reform. The battle between the left-wing Macedonian cavalry and the opposing Romans left both forces badly scattered. The Macedonian cavalry was able to reform with the Galatians and advance on the now scattered legions. Meanwhile two of the phalanxes had run far enough that their exhaustion outweighed their terror and they stopped to catch their breath. Their officers got them back in formation and faced back toward the battle just in time to face a couple units of Roman cavalry looking for more fugitives to ride down. As the pikes turned to face them some Macedonian skirmishers arrived to help and between them stall the Roman cavalry.

At that point the Roman army broke. Once the Romans broke my line they should have won. Somehow my troops hung on and wore the Romans down. hscic thanks for a tough battle.

The Mighty Ulys horde of Phalangites and brave cavalry drew up opposite by a scarec few of Grims Carthaginian expeditionary force .

Carthage relied on a wooded right flank and a hill with more woods to their left.
The earth thundered as the brave phalanx sternly paced forward., carthage raced to surmount the hill and on the other flank its light troops scurried toward their opposites.

The carthaginian centre slowly fell back, trembling at the sheer might of the phalanx, carthages light troops fell away retiring to the woods after the first flush of engagement.

The phalanxes supporting troops became embroiled with the Carthaginains on the hill, Ulys cavalry surged to get round their flank and take the hill as more carthaginian veterans appeared from the woods behind the hill and, Alas carthage's cavalry burst forward far on the flank

Finally the Phalanx pinned down the Carthaginian centre and engaged, tragically the carthaginain veterand, elephant and cavalry on the hill overwhelmed their opponents and the phalanx only slowly ground forward until forced into square for fear of attack from rear or flank.

on the other flank As the Ulysian light troops approached the wood more carthagininians infantry and cavalry appeared and their light infantry lept from their cowering on the far flank to press forward.

Isolated the phalanx finally succumbed to the carthaginian horde.

Great battle, could easily have gone either way at several points, thanks Ulysis., look forward to our next encounter, I think this makes it 2:1 to you...
