Somebody may have put your army out by then (I bleieve we have all the troops needed between us) but I believe it is a 15:00 start as most of the Manchester boys (all fine young men) won't be there 'til then. So you may be able to participate

I think that kick off is aiming for 3 but if we know you are interested I am sure Simon would be happy to pencil you in to run one of the contingents.

Don't worry about knowing the rules, there will be plenty of experienced hands to ask and they are quite simple to pick up really.

Belay that last missive of mine.
It seems I'm on duty Friday until midday. I probably wont get down to Ascot until at least 3.30pm now.
You can probably take my place as I'm am now doubtful about making it down on Friday.
From what others have posted, you should expect to participate if you can get there approx 3 ish.

I'll probably join in at a suitable point as I cannot guarantee getting there before 3.30-4pm as I have to go via the M25!!!

General Background

The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (or Fields), also called the Battle of Châlons (also spelled Chalons or Chalon) or Battle of the Campus Mauriacus, took place in 451 between a coalition led by the Roman general Flavius Aetius and the Visigothic king Theodoric I on one side and the Huns and their allies commanded by Attila on the other. It was one of the last major military operations of the Western Roman Empire and marks the apex of the career of Flavius Aetius.

What, When and Where ?

As a prelude to the BHGS Challenge we are running a massive Field of Glory game on the Friday, with co-author Simon Hall organising and umpiring the game.

4000 points a side – so the equivalent of 10 FOG singles armies on a single battlefield. The game will be played in Ascot at the BHGS Challenge venue – thanks to the BHGS team for the use of the facilities. The table will be roughly 20 feet wide and the game is likely to feature 15 or more players.

The game will start around 3pm on Friday April 3rd and is likely to run well into the evening. Feel free to come and spectate and the players will be more than happy to have a few more dice-rollers join in the fun.

Will Attila or Flavius Eutius carry the day? Below is some information – thanks to wikipedia – about the actual battle in 451AD.

The Players so far
Roman ~4000 pts

Roman 1 Dave Fairhurst (Flavius Aetius)
Roman 2 Spike
Visigoth 1 Lynda Fairhurst

Hun ~4000pts

Hun 1 James Hamilton (Atilla)

Now we are in the final run up I believe the current status is as above. We ideally need a couple more players, but as I am sure we will have people joining in on the day as long as we have figures I propose to go ahead with the game as planned even if a couple short (and I can cover for 1 anyway).

Please could

Send me an e-mail titled CHALONS to

siathedgecroft@aol.com

So I can put a mailing list together for the game to use over the next 10 days.

Si,

Do we need to bring camps for each contingent, or is the plan to have a single "army" camp?
Any clearer idea on start time given some people are travelling on the day?

Dan Hazlewood has joined the game as the Burgundians, so Chalons has now gone international.

Just 1 space left but anyone coming along is welcome to come and take over a few BGs

I will sending a short B&W report to Slingshot and doing a longer one with colour photos to go into one of the Mags ideally.

So Tim ....

1st and short

2nd Slingshot

3rd Full report

0th .... very very short ... the huns won (just) the Romans being finally surrounded and dying to a man in true Roman style as the light faded.
