Surely this situation come up in playtesting?
It most certainly did. See this thread here:

It must be pointed out that I was on the receiving end this time

Shock troops, who'd have em...
Only those listed on page 74 to my knowledge, unless I've missed something elsewhere in the rules. They are rather limited.
Surely this situation come up in playtesting? I do not recall it happening to me during beta games but lots of people playtested it worldwide
True, they are quite limited, but they still exist. There are also plenty of times when you want to get as close as possible (i.e. within an inch) of troops - mainly when you are about to charge troops who can evade. If you modify the rules so you can't approach within 2" this makes single ranked cavalry far too powerful IMO. Skirmishers also may want to get that close so they can evade a particular way / or if space is tight.
I regularly get to within midges nads of enemy BG's.
Anyway, my intention was to point out a possible house rule mod for those inclined. Not to trumpet changing the book after it being around for five minutes!
Not having a go at anybody in particular - please don't feel singled out!!!

It may well have done (actually I'd be surprised if it did not), however, it is possible that when it did the players concerned did not consider it an issue. Maybe they were of the opinion that they'd screwed up and got what they deserved - it would certainly have been my view in the circumstance.
No doubt about that, the bloke realised it. Tis to be fully expected with a new set. Should have seen my first game with the published set after not having played Beta after a few months

Heck no, not in the least.
Thanks for linking that thread. Was going to do a search before my original post on this thread but I could have been there for ever trolling through.
Got to say my post was not that clear actually. The pitfalls posting in the wee small hours'.
As you said, within an 1", but no closer. Simply for the sake of clarity on the table, especially for big multiplayer games. We do a lot of that. Have not as yet with FoG, as I'm currently introducing my buddies to the rules. only one other of the guys here locally was a playtester.

Thinking about it the turn 90 and move is another of the things that new players need to be made aware of.
That means new players who want to improve should look to study intercept charges, evades and the maneuver table, specifically turn 90 and move.
I found that in games 3-9 of my my learning expereience. I would often try funking manuvers even when relatively un-important to get in the habit of understanding the limits and options of manuver. This has worked well for me.
