Panzer General, of course :D
Later I played with other games, including PG2 and 3. I love Panzer Corps because it has the PG1 feeling with better combat mechanism, interface, editor etc. etc. and it has graphics better than PG2 :)
(Personally I think that PG3 had actually worse visual than 2. Ugly 3D maps after nice 2D? Why they changed that? Makes no sense.)

That was an excellent game. Their Pacific version of sea warfare was excellent.

My first was on the C64, "War of the Lance" done by SSI. Brilliant for the time, and you can still play it on emulator: http://www.myabandonware.com/game/war-of-the-lance-11z

My first WW2 strategy game was V for Victory: Gold-Juno-Sword. Then I found Panzer General...

Mine was Arnhem on the Spectrum computer (Remember those rubber keys) back in 1986/87. I brought it on a Friday morning and finished playing my first session early Sunday morning and then spent the next 15 hours sleeping. This game kept me going for many months. Oh the joys of University life!! It was a turn based game by CCS. Here is the link to bring back those memories www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6P20bMeGtw.

Yes this game introduced me to turn based strategy games and ever since I have never been able to get my head around RTS games. Before Panercorps came out you would always find me returning to Panzer, Pacific and Allied General along with the Civilisation series. In recent years I have found the HPS Simulation series superb especially the Panzer Campaign in Normandy which I have spent hours and hours playing.

My first ones were on cartredge for my Atari 800xl, River Raiders and Eastern Front. I still have the old computer and the games!
I cut my teeth before that back in the 70's with the Avlon Hill board games and 1/1200 naval wargaming (Seapower II and III) by a company called Alnavco. Then it was Avlon Hill's computer games on my brother in laws Apple II - but the first computer war game to really hook me was from SSI called Kampfgruppe. That was for my atari 800xl also - one of my first war game purchase on 51/4" floppies no less.

The next big highs for me were the Great Naval battles series, Panzer General's, Pacific General, Allied General's and what at the time was the creme on the top "Steel Panthers". I even managed to get into a group of avaid fans and created a lot of scenerio's for the S.P. series. All the Sudden strike RTS and the Blitzkrieg series of RTS also. Wow RTS games are ok for a quick fix but thank God Panzer Corps came along - puts me back in turn based strat nervona once again!

The first proper one was Battle Isle on a friend's machine (an Amiga I think).
It had a lot of good challenging features, and I spent many hours playing it.

Mmmm... Panzer Strike, Typhoon of Steel, and Crusade in Europe. All on the C64. Unless you count Armor Battle on the Intellivision.

The Battle for Okinawa, on C64: http://www.gb64.com/game.php?id=9310

Horrible graphics, terrible interface, but really challenging. Taught me gaming basics, like usage of artillery.
