The mailclad lumberjacks suddenly lunged to get to grips and, while it was clear the doughty Dailami foot could not match them, immediately had flank issues that evened the contest some what.


Most importanly the Viking attack spread them too thin to stop the Khorasanian right flank scattering their opposition and exposing the Nordic rear.

Two similar armies faced up, spear against warband. The result was bloody and pretty equal, with only the Viking Huscarls proving indomitable. The Visigoth cavalry managed to turn a flank and hit just enough flanks to turn the tide.

The numbers tell it all.. the Byzantine army was able to control the Turkish to an extent at the first half of the battle; gaining here and there but all it took was one over extension, and the fluid mobility of horse archers for some flanks to be found which led to chain routes leaving both armies battered. The Byzantine then took the time to attempt consolidating their lines and isolating enemy units; the Turks circles Byzantine stragglers like sharks. The battle oscillated between dead even and the Turks winning by a point; until quite literally the cav saved the day (one single fragmented Byzantine/nomad horse archer entering the map from the south, where they evaded off screen a couple turns back.)

Both armies drew up on each other though something seemed amiss with the Franks, a handful of units seemed to be missing.. and upon some light reconnoiter work a couple of generals were eerily scarce. The Byzantine proceeded with caution.. a few small hills for each side and heavy woods off to the NW behind the Franks and lo- out burst nine cav units with half being lancers out from the woodline. The Byzantine braced and pressed forward quickly in an attempt to gain a favorable position. Battle ensued!

Tough scrap where the Frankish spears just managed to stave off the Indian Elephants, and then managed to stay ahead in the ensuing melees.

The rolling terrain slowly reveals the bulk of the forces involved with the arrowphobic pyjama clad heroes well into the march and counter march.


Turn 12
The antagonists settle down to a mostly static fighting line.


The valiant Khorasanians concentrate their efforts on our left flank which our horse and foot eventually come to dominate with the remainder of our forces along the line holding long enough til the Ump calls time.

The Rus and there Viking Allies formed a tightly packed formation of Spears and Archers with limited cavalry support. Unfortunately they simply left there flanks exposed to the horde of Bedouin Lancers who slowly picked apart there formation exploiting every opportunity to disrupt the formation driving them into reckless charges against the lancers to little gain as the Formation slowly feel to pieces.

Also harveylh you appeared based on my calculation to have missed my victory over Indibil which is the first result posted in this thread. I think. At the very least you've missed one of my victories in this thread.

Well, the Spanish will not be invited back to the Russian steppes. Then again, the battle clearly didn't take place on the steppes! wulf85's Rus 960 and their Viking allies occupied a string of hills that included a fair bit of rough and woods terrain. And the Spanish were basically in an open plain (though the small contingent of Muslim infantry was able to occupy a hill on the left).

Recognizing that the rough terrain did not favour the Vikings or the Rus, and that they had limited bow and light cavalry available, the Spanish elected to deploy a maximum missile force, instead of seeking a different battle field. The Spanish infantry moved a couple of steps forward to a basic defensive position, while the skirmishers engaged the Rus missile troops, quickly demonstrating their superior numbers. On the Spanish right, their cavalry advanced, supported by more devastating fire from the skirmishers, and the Muslim light cavalry and skirmishers on the left whittled away at any units that came within range. Eventually the Vikings led a charge down the hills and into the waiting Spanish shield wall, but it was too late - their supporting missile troops and most of their cavalry had disintegrated.

More rolling hills and woods allowed for a lot of hidden shenanigans before most of the respective forces became visible.


Turn 9
The battle lines set(ish), ambushers exposed and again the Dailami struggle to hold their own or worse against the Lumberjacks from the North.


In the end the battle was won in the centre at the edge of the big hill with the Ulfhednar routed then the Huscarls and Bondi flanked.
