From the FoG web site, Julian is ranked 2nd in the Spanish rankings, 3rd in the World rankings. He's not seeded at Britcon - maybe it's based on UK rankings only.
For what it's worth, I didn't use them at the IWF/EIC in Roma (although I did ask if I was obliged to use them).

The Spanish rankings were last updated in October 2008, likewise the world rankings in December 2008.
Take them with a pinch of salt to be honest.
Pedro Sanchez is however seeded

Julian really should be seeded but he only switched to FoG at the very last moment when POW was cancelled. We may change the seeds accordingly before the start. As I have said before the seeding is not exactly significant and there are a lot of good players who aren't seeded.
FWIW I have won tournaments as a non seed and finished below half way when I have been seeded.

Of course the seedings do help the seeded players or way elese do it.
I've been told that people might play for a draw if two top seeders play, now I can see that happening not example last night Dave and Phil neither played for a draw or I've never seen Hammy play for a draw I know a club game is different but. To be honest a stright draw would'nt stop the top players winning it might make it harder for them though. Too me it gives easier games to top players thats fine but say that then don't hide behind other reasons.
If your going to have seedings why such a high properation in the early period 44 players 10 seeded players 23% seeded seems a tad high.
TBH this will not change, and I'm sure there are some very good players who have'nt been seeded.
We normally seed 25% of a period. Seeding means that the 'better' players are more likely to play each other in the second round. There is probably a tiny advantage to being seeded but compared with the other randomness it is not really significant.

And anyway this year I have such a wily plan you could pin a tail on it and call it a coyote.
Is that the "charge straight ahead with 40+ bases of cavalry superior armoured lancer swordsmen" plan, or another one?
Shh! It's a secret. But its not quite 40 bases.... Perhaps I spent to much on the support troop?

Oh I do. For example, I don't even have a world ranking, when I quite obviously should be numero uno...

That would explain things with Julian.
I would agree with Graham though. With 100 or more players, it possibly helps push things in the right direction, but with a six game meeting of 50 players it matters less. Isn't the rough rule of thumb 2 to the power of the number of rounds to get a "correct" result in Swiss? So six rounds is 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64.
Not that it has anything to do with me!

I think the underlying assumption is that whoever wins in the end will have won all his games. In rounds 2 to 6 he will have played opponents who have also won all their games up to that point, so are difficult opponents. In round 1 with a random draw, some seeds will get a hard game against another seed, while others get an easy game. The ones with the easy game get an advantage as they can win by playing 1 easy and 5 hard games instead of 6 hard games. Giving all seeds an easy game ensures that none has an unfair advantage. It also means that a very good unseeded player does not get an unfair advantage, although he has a chance of getting an unfair disadvantage if he has to play a seed.
Of course, we are not using a pure win/lose swiss system, so in reality things are more complicated. However, the scoring and pairing system we use tends to balance things out in the long run, so it's unlikely that seeding will do any harm nd it might actually do some good.

Not any more. There isn't much of interest on there. Somebody should take responsibility and get the site updated.
A bit unfair Dave. IIRC Matt Haywood is the BHGS webmaster and I don't believe he frequents any FOG lists. therefore he relies on those who do to pass him the information to post. Like any information system it's only as good as the information provided.
Also like the rest of us he does have a demanding job that eats into his wargaming time!
Though he does find time to paint gorgeous armies.....

If Matt Haywood is the BHGS webmaster perhaps he can explain why i am not a member of that highly regarded association

I did sent mt applicaction for in 2008 before dublin ...no answr, filled it in at dublion, no answer...and filled another one 2-3 month ago ...well I am amused to waiting now

yes amused ...
Ok he does , I am sure of it, great work ...

There I was, hoping to join the FOG competition incognito and pretend I hadn't got a clue to lull my opponents into a false sense of security and Peter comes along and blows my cover. Thanks a BUNCH!
And the Spanish rankings are out of date. I came first in 2008...
As for the great seeding debate, I just can't get excited about being seeded or not. With six games, I just don't think it's relevant. In all likelihood you'll be playing most of the good players anyway if you are going to win. So what does it matter whether it's on Friday or Sunday?
Having said that, I WILL be upset if I'm not given a proper valuation for the only competition that matters at Britcon: the Fantasy Wargames League.

I hope to see you around the event on Friday for a small beer, its nice to see you have brought the same Army with you. As you can see I've left the Medium Foot at home this time but would welcome another game should the draw fall that way.

No Fantasy League this year - it had ceased to be popular I'm afraid.
There is something to replace it though ...

As soon as I posted this, I realised the mistake I made. In no way was the comment I made related to Matt - I was thinking of a more complete re-organisation than just the stuff Matt does on a daily basis to keep the site going.

You need to send your application form to me please if you want to join the BHGS. There isn't an on-line application function via the web-site if that is what you have tried.
