Carpenkm (Bosporan) defeats Bodhran (thracian) 53 -24

A lancer slipped past the flank with inevitable consequences for the engaged warbands. The usual warband cascade rout finished the game prematurely. Well played.

(Roman) Defeats Angus (Jewish) 30% to 57%

The Sneakily Important Terrain

When the opposing Jewish general commented to an aid "This battlefield has sneakily important terrain. I guess marshes don't look like much" He perhaps should have noticed this sooner in his plans...

The medium sized swamp sat right at the centre of the battlefield played a pivotal role in the battle with the Roman force deploying wholly to the left of the swamp and the Jewish forces split partially by it. The Battle revolved around the swamp with the Romans defending the edge and attempting to smash the Jewish right flank while the holding the centre.

The Jewish pike did a sterling job and very nearly did their work in time as the Roman centre crumbled under the weight of pikes and started to work along the swamp edge, but their right flank folded before their attack could be finished and the Romans swung onto the rear of the pikes.

A tough battle and if the Jewish right flank had held a turn or two longer it could have been the Romans losing the fight.

As ever plenty of good banter and a tough match. Thank you.

TomoeGozen(Kushan) defeats Karvon(Sarmation) 29 -54 ..

..after a lengthy game of cat and mouse (or more accurately , elephant and horse..) around various bits of terrain :-)

Thanks to karvon for an interesting and fun game.

carpenkm (Bosporan) beat Sawyerk (galatian) 64-34

A battle spoilt by a large stream across the middle. The Galaltians tried manfully to cross the stream, but got caught by medium foot who were able to stand against the superior warbands. Once a couple of lancers slipped by the Galatian left flank the writing was on the wall. Well played.

Group C

Triarii defeats General Kostas 44-13.

A Pontic deployment right of rough ground caught the Indo Greek army out. The Pontic force being luckily arrayed against their weaker left flank in superior numbers.
Though the Indo-Greek army refused its left onto a wooded hill and despite a near disaster in the Pontic centre when very tenacious Indian MI (a single protected MI unit, in the middle of flat open terrain, beat off two separate cataphract attacks, one with a disruption, and double dipped an imitation legion charge in three consecutive impacts in a single turn) the more numerous Pontic skirmishers were able to shoot their way on top and allow the Pontic mediums to beat disrupted Indo-Greeks and the Pontic phalanx units to move down the Indo-Greek line before the stronger Indo-Greek right could get properly involved.
Good game many thanks.

A hail of arrows. A couple of lucky cav charges finished this one and gave a premature end to a close and fun battle. Well played.

Group A

Kroche (Bithynian) defeats Indibil (Skythian) 22% to 47%

A good match where Bithynians took an early lead as a small Skythian push on our far right was defeated by skirmishers backed by medium foot. The main Skythian force of horse archers and lancers advanced and started to cause some gaps in the line through charges and missile fire and at the half way mark Bithynians still had the lead but with some units suffering heavy casualties and the Irregular foot of the Skythians were moving into the centre and threatening flank charges as the Bithynian line was a bit more fractured. After some success the Skythian lancers were stuck in melee with the more numerous Bithynian foot and they were quickly ground down, forcing the Skythian horse archers into unfavoured charges to try and help their colleagues. (Roman) Defeats Kroche (Bithynian) 22% to 48%

Look after your Pennies and the Pounds will look after themselves

Sometimes it is not the big things that win you the battle but lots of little things adding up.

50% of the Bithynian Cavalry being led astray by an attractive looking weaker Roman Cavalry unit luring them away from the main battlefield.

The Skirmish fight where the Romans managed to win their left and centre and while leading astray the Bithynian lights on the right.

The weaker Bithynian right flank rotating and securing their flank on their entry point and the Romans being prepared to march all the way to the base line and still engage that flank and win.

The delayed Bithynian Warband charge that allowed the Romans to get into position.

The over eager Bithynian Cavalry unit who ended up being surrounded by Roman lights and pilum’d to breaking point within short distance of his friendly line who stood and watched as they did not want to be lured out of line.

The Roman right flank holding on just long enough…

All these led to the Roman victory just as some of the Bithynian Warbands got into the Roman rear and also one of their Cavalry broke through and would have made short work of the Romans on the right.

A tough and very interesting game and a worthy opponent Thank You for the game.

Group B

SawyerK leading the Galatians defeated

Bodhran and his Thracian Getae army by 43-14.

The battle began with the Thracian light horse attacking the flanks of the Galatians as they advanced and then developed into a tremendous heavy cavalry conflict on the Galatians left flank. The Galatian heavy foot paused their advance and diverted a number of warbands into the cavalry conflict. The use of the warbands tilted that battle in the Galatians favor. Once most of the Thracian horse was defeated, the Galatians continued their advance, with the Thracian light foot and horse continually chipping away at their opponents. The battle ended precipitously when a Galatian warband revived from routed status and created a 25-point margin at the beginning of the Thracian turn.

Well done - you qualify for the knockout stage.

We are just waiting on two results from Group D to complete the group stage

Aetius (Ptolemaic) defeats random27 (Thracians) 47-16

The Thracians pelted the pikes hard, but pikes are, well, pikes, and eventually got to the weaker main units, and although the battle was heated, some flanks and the strength of the pikes won the day. GG!

One game to be completed and these are the standings. Unless Karvon pulls out a big win over Aetius39 these will be the final standings. Remember there will be two knockout stages - the Cup for the top two players from each group and the Plate for the bottom two.

I'm not very likely to win this last match, nor score enough to change the current standings; I'll score a draw at best.
