It is correct that a province can only be attacked if it is adjacent to one that you control? In other words, no sea borne invasion allowed.
No Dave, you can attack any province

I Alexander 'Okubyou' Imagawa take my rightful place upon the seat of government of my clans fiefdom. Our castle has been fortified, our peasants have stored away many thousand Sho of rice incase anyone is foolish enough to try and lay siege to our castle. We have sent out generous offers to any Ronin wandering the lands to come and take part in our glorious victories. Any Sohei disaffected with the ditherings of those who do not follow the ways of Amitabha Buddha are also welcome to come and join us. I call on all clans to put aside their squabbling and unite under our banner to unite this land. Those who ally with me shall be guaranteed a fief of their own, many Sho of rice and numerous concubines..well, maybe not numerous concubines...there is a bit of a shortage lately...but at least one or two new pretty faces. Shouri he!

NB. Home Provinces don't have province names Dave, they only have the clan descriptor. (Mogami is
purple and belongs to
Tokugawa )

Oda Nobunaga (KiwiWarlord) 19% beats Takeda Shingen (Doyley50) 69% and claims the Takeda Home Province.
The mighty Takeda's Home Province has been over run and they are now retainers of Oda.
An expensive Victory for Oda Nobunga as Oda Yorishisa was killed when his Honjin was over run by Flank Marching Samurai Lancers and Sub General Oda Tametada was killed when assaulting the Takeda Honjin. ( which survived four assaults )
Five Takeda units were broken in one move hence the very high loss % & thus ending the battle.

NEW RULE
To return balance to open battles, make players think twice about fast-tracking to gather retainers, and persuade defenders not to run away, any home province battles from this post onward applies the new rule below:-
- If an attack on a home province is declared and the challenger's army is broken, the challenger becomes the retainer

Gavin, probably my rather cowardly Hojo inspired this rule and that is fine. When you say 'win' do you mean 'break the army'? In an attack game, any result other than than breaking the defender army is considered a defeat. So you might say:
If an attack on a home province is declared and the challenger's army is broken, the challenger becomes the retainer
You could also add: 'If the defender's Daimyo is killed in battle, the home province surrenders to the challenger'

Not at all Alan, I'm embarrassed by my own conduct on the field and was starting to get a persecution complex...ikko ikki seems to be very desirable for sharks!
Moreover, I bow to your superior logic and decree (and going a step further):-
- If an attack on a home province is declared and the challenger's army is broken, the challenger becomes the retainer
- In any battle if either Daimyo is killed in battle and they lose the battle, the clan surrenders to the winning clan and becomes their retainer.

The new Rules come into effect from now on I assume Gavin, so Challenges already posted are played as per the original rules ?
I do agree with the new rules, they give a bit more realism to the historical happenings of the time.

Correct Brian. Your challenge is prior to the new rule.

I need clarification on another matter. Is attacking a retainer considered an attack on the lord that controls the retainer? Or does that really depend on each lord's feelings in this matter? Just curious.

Alex, obviously a Daimyo will not be happy if you attack his retainers.

I can't speak for my esteemed and exalted Shogun and lord, the magnanimous, majestic, and honorable Asakura Yoshikage

, or any other lord, but I expect they may take exception to your clan attacking their retainers and seek retribution in the form of challenges to your provinces.

They will also probably persuade and suggest the retainer and their other retainers to issue challenges. (unscrupulous ones might even send ninja's to your fortress town.

)
Hope this gives you comfort and helps you to sleep soundly at night

Most honorable Ikko ikki leader Gavin, thank you for the clarification. It will certainly let me sleep more soundly at night, ninjas or not, though whenever I go to my fortresses toilet, I swear I hear snickering coming from the dark of the toilet hole...
