The Roman Tribune - 3rd Edition - EDITORIAL AMENDMENT
No one should be in any doubt of the impartiality of this illustrious publication.
We are entirely even handed in our reporting and seek to uphold the highest scholarly standards.
That said, the criticism we have received for not publishing the Eastern armies horrendous losses is justified.
This publication was seeking to shield the citizens of the eastern provinces from the cataclysm that has befallen their army, under the leadership of the usurper Kronenius.
We therefore issue the following amendment:
Turn 2 result - Gothic raid of Cappadocia
Goths (Stew101) losses 55% vs Roman V (Kronenblatt) losses 63%.
May the Gods now protect the eastern provinces from the Gothic hordes (they'll have horses too)!
All good citizens can rest assured that it is only a matter of time before the true Emperor unifies the Empire again.
Vivat Roma et Imperator
Standing With Ukraine.

3a. SnuggleBunnies (Romans II, 1581 FP) versus Stew101 (Romans I, 1589 FP) in Germania Superior (V).
This match was a bloodless draw

Raid: Alamans attack SnuggleBunnies in Agri Decumates (VI)
Aetius (Alamans) defeats SnuggleBunnies (Romans) 7-11 due to C-in-C fallen!
In the thick of the battle, with the two armies engaged all down the line, the enemy C-in-C was sighted, and although putting up a mighty fight till the end, fell to the Gallic swords! This was fortunate, as although the battle was far from decided, it did seem to be slowly tilting in the Romans' favor. GG!

Aoch, second time for SnuggleBunnies' C-in-C... Also, Germanic descendants would be upset to hear Alamans referred to as "Gallic"... There's no prouder Germanic tribe than the Alamans!

Conquest: Aetius39 attacks Geffalrus in Macedonia (Romans IV vs. Romans III)
Result: Geffalrus victory 48-17 (both cinc survive)
With the majority of the Pannonian legions marching west to partake in the invasion of Italy, the defense of Macedonia was left to a handful of Danubian legions, a large cohort of allied Goths (warbands and noble cavalry), and a host of fresh recruits (mediocre legions). Taking the field on a wide open plain to leverage their superior numbers, the Geffalran defenders did their best to envelope the flanks of Caesar Aetius; he in turn, did his best to not be enveloped. A quick end to the battle was almost achieved when the Gothic lieutenant rushed his cavalry forward to engaged the Caesar directly.....alas he and his bodyguards merely broke and ran before he could be cut down. The bloody business began with flank cavalry forces getting tangled up early, followed by the veteran Panonians and Gothic elites, with the fresh recruits joining in only when it became necessary to slow down the Anatolian veteran legions pushing through the center. Ultimately, fortune smiled on the Geffalran forces just a little more than the Aetians, and when combined with the flank attack opportunities provided by their superior numbers, victory was achieved. "To the Hellespont and BEYOND" went the victorious cheers of the eager amateurs and grizzled veterans.
GG Aetius. Time to focus my attention on the campaign in Italia......

Conquest: Geffalrus attacks Snugglebunnies in Italy (Rome III vs Rome II)
Result: Snugglebunnies surrenders at 6-6
The Pannonian legions met the Italian legions and Praetorian cohort along a wooded river near the city of Cremona. The Italian legions had a larger force of experienced heavy infantry, while the Pannonians brought a much larger force of auxiliaries and Gothic elite warbands. Neither side invested much in cavalry due to the restricted nature of the battlefield. Anchored by forests on either flank, the Italians quickly realized that they lacked the medium foot necessary to properly contest either. Initial skirmishing was bloody, but indecisive, and the Italian legions were unable to surge forward and and force a conventional engagement before the Pannonian auxiliaries claimed the woods and set up unstoppable flanking opportunities. With morale plummeting, the Praetorians guarding the false emperor gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.
The green auxiliaries engaging in a full flank of the red line, while elite Gothic troops exploit gaps:

An Empire in Flames II: Replacement player wanted!

SnuggleBunnies is dropping out of the campaign, so we're, starting in the next round (III), looking for a player replacing him as
green Roman faction, using the
Romans II army, including some Germanic units.
PM me or write here in case you're interested.
We'll also amend some rules going forward to hopefully encourage aggressive play and attacking.
For information, SnuggleBunnies' games this second round won't count, so round III will start with replacement player's
green territory as follows:

An Empire in Flames - Campaign II: Doyley50 joining!

Doyley50 (Alan) will, starting in next round (III), be taking over as the green Roman faction. Welcome and the best of luck in this chaotic third century!

5a. kronenblatt (Romans V, 1600 FP) versus Aetius39 (Romans IV, 1578 FP) in Lycia et Cilicia (XXII).
Aetius (Romans IV) defeats kronenblatt (Romans V) 58-25
A nasty river separated our armies, and at first the Roman V's skirmish tactics started to wear down our side. So eventually we crossed the river and managed to engage their army, especially the archers through charges and attacks from behind. It was a mess, and the IV Romans got a bit lucky on flanks/rear attacks. GG!

Geffalrus (Franks) and Stew101 (Romans I) agree to a draw (Frankish losses 6%, Roman losses 8%)
Bit anticlimactic as the turns were quite active with much maneuver on both sides. However, that maneuver mostly involved the Romans consolidating on a superb hill, while the warbands wandered around and caught a few stragglers. Frankish skirmishers attempted to bait the Romans out, but lost their lives for no end. With only 6 turns left, both sides agreed that nothing else was likely to happen as neither side had much reason to advance. The elite but small Roman force did not want to leave their hill and get out flanked by the massive Frankish horde.
Round II (262-264 AD): Concluded battles

by kronenblatt
1b. Geffalrus (Franks, 1600 FP) versus Stew101 (Romans I, 1589 FP) in Germania Inferior (IV). => Geffalrus draws with Stew101 8-6.
2b. Stew101 (Goths, 1600 FP) versus kronenblatt (Romans V, 1600 FP) in Cappadocia (XXI). => Stew101 defeats kronenblatt 63-55.
=> Cappadocia (XXI) becomes 'looted'.
4a. Aetius39 (Romans IV, 1578 FP) versus Geffalrus (Romans III, 1631 FP) in Macedonia (XVII). => Geffalrus defeats Aetius39 48-17.
=> Geffalrus conquers Thracia (XVI) plus 1 additional province: Asia (XIX) or Bithynia et Pontus (XVIII)?
5a. kronenblatt (Romans V, 1600 FP) versus Aetius39 (Romans IV, 1578 FP) in Lycia et Cilicia (XXII). => Aetius39 defeats kronenblatt 58-25.
=> Aetius39 conquers Cappadocia (XXI) plus 1 additional province: Mesopotamia (XXIV) (in order to keep orange territory together).
Round III (264-266 AD): attack declarations
Posted: Wed Feb 01, 2023 9:38 pm
by kronenblatt
Attack declarations (order based on number of controlled provinces)
- Geffalrus (9 provinces, 0 killed C-in-C's, 0 FP Penalty): February 2
- Stew101: (8, 0, 0): February 3
- Aetius39 (4.5, 0, 0): February 4
- Doyley50 (4, 0, 0): February 5
- kronenblatt (4, 0, 0): February 6
Please note
- The attack declaration will be made in a post in the campaign thread on the forum.
- There are two types of attacks (conquest and raid).
- Players are each round required (if possible) to declare one conquest attack but can decide whether to also declare one raid attack that round.
- A player’s conquest and raid attacks in a round cannot be made upon one and the same Roman faction but must be made upon two different Roman factions.
- Example on how to express an attack declaration:
- Conquest: kronenblatt attacks rs2excelsior's Italia (XIII) from Raetia (VII).
- Raid: Franks attack Germania Inferior (IV) from homelands.
- Raid: Franks attack from Germania Inferior (IV). (this normal raid attack requires Germania Inferior (IV) to have already been successfully raided and thus looted by the Franks.)
- (Sea) Raid: Goths attack Macedonia (XVII) from homelands. (sea raid attacks are always made from Goths' homelands.)
- Date (midnight CET (Rome) time) above indicates deadline, after which opportunity for you to declare attack is forfeited and the player next in line may declare his attack.
- Once you have declared an attack, please PM the player next in line, who will then be free to declare his attack, up to his deadline, so we all don't need to wait for each player's deadline.

Geffalrus attacks Aetius39 in Asia (XIX) from Bithynia et Pontus (XVIII)
Geffalrus raids Stew101......again.....in Agri Decumates (IV) with the Franks
Edit: Kro - I meant to say Germania Inferior (which is the actual province number 4) but got mixed up. Basically just doing a redo of my raid with Stew last round. Agri Decumates is technically held by Doyle.

2. Stew101
Round 3 orders:
Conquest: Stew101 attacks Doyley50 in Africa (XXIX) from Mauretania (XXVIII).
Raid: Goths attack Geffalrus in Moeria Inferior (XII).
The publishers would like to express their apologies for the late publication of 'The Roman Tribune'.
The is due to the my game with Snuggles gasping to a draw. Nearly completed it then the presses can roll.

Please don’t set up any games anyone, until all players have posted their attacks and I’ve posted a summary about the attacks and the battles they’re resulting in.
Then the defenders will be setting up the games, after the attackers has advised which allies (if any) to bring.

Also we'll need to exact FP scores for each player. And maybe a re-stating of the new rules so everyone fully understands the stakes.

If you mean FP penalties, they're currently zero for all players, since I don't want to introduce them retroactively. Does anyone need re-stating of the changed rules? You've all confirmed that you're fine with them.
