The heroic reigns of Claudius and Aurelian had re-asserted Rome’s military pre-eminence. But the empire was still unsettled politically with both Claudius and Aurelian being murdered by elements of the army. In the end it was to fall to Diocletian to create a new political system, the Tetrarchy, a revolution which ended classical Rome.

The Sasanian invasion of 297 bogged down after early successes. In the following year, king Narseh moved into the Armenian highlands, followed by the Caesar Galerius. With the help of the locals, Galerius was able to surprise the Sasanians in their encampment near Satala and inflicted on them an overwhelming defeat that avenged the catastrophe of Edessa.
