I'll fix that before I send you the full results, it's probaly a scoresheet error but doesn't affect the overall result.

Actually a belief that Hunter's score is totally wrong as he thinks he had around 70 points. Was his last score recorded wrongly as I think he won something like 17 to 3 against the West Sudanese.

Forgot to say, tremendous and heartfelt congratulations to Alasdair. A real master class in FOGR.
I know how he gubbed me but watching some of his other games I am not sure how he does it but by god he does it well.
Selling his soul to the devil I bet

'What Soul'

Lots and Lots of thank yous

Firstly a massive one to Tim and colleagues like Kevin who organised a superbly and smoothly well run tournament

Thanks to Nigel for the lift and Paddy apologies for the snoring and onto the games

Round 1 looking for that easy 1st game poor muskets would have been great but NO I get Richard Bodley Scott who slaughtered me in this event last year, revenge was required, Richard formed into the well known Spanish Tercio formation except in this case it was a 12 inch square with 2 batteries of heavy guns pointing and all other faces of the square consisting of superior pike and shot battlegroups with horse in the middle. His whole army was in the square, if you don’t believe me Hunter has the photos. Obviously the solution when faced with an enemy formation you don’t understand or know how to deal with send in the expendable mercenaries in this case the allied unarmoured superior Swedish determined horse straight into the heavy gun battery backed up by Spanish Superior Pike and shot, down at impact and down at melee, I rolled ok in both, Richard up a POA in impact and melee rolled 10 dice rerolling 1’s and 2’s and got no hits, (rumour has it that the poor gentle scotch man on the next table Hunter hadn’t even heard of some of the profanities issueing from the good Doctors mouth) Swedes into the square, lots of charges in the rear, Spanish army dead. No skill lucky dice.

Round 2 Jim and the Scots Royalist which I had watched on the table next to me destroy the Scots Covenanter Game 1, hoping for lots of Highlanders to ride down but no lots and lots of Pike and shot, fortunately managed to get around the flanks and lots of nasty flank charges. Enjoyable game against a fun opponent.

Round 3 Expecting the game against John but Dave Redhead and his machine gun Danish had popped upto the top. Both of extremely aggressive from the start with Dave’s left flank flying across the table and me on the opposite side, units traded but a few flank attacks and the small army size (11 I think) and the Danes broke

Round 4 the expected game against John with his Austrians and lots of firepower and fortifications, a very cagey start from both of us, but I think the fact that John had had a draw the game before meant he had to be aggressive, lots and lots of terrain went down and John got the better of the early exchanges with as per usual Swedes dying (this time the Dragoons) but overextended slightly allowing my cavalry to attempt lots of glorious charges against shot only battlegroups and achieve success . Again a hard fought and cagey game, thanks John.

Round 5 Also expected the game against Don Avis and the Samaurai which came flying across the table against me blasting a two foot whole in the middle of my line but the heroic Swedes and a few other successful German Horse (their heavily armoured colleagues were a disgrace) managed to allow me win on the flanks but only just, one more go would have seen me lose 2 more horse, my second gun battery and my camp and been only a couple of breaking myself. As ever with Don and excellent game and played in the right spirit which leaves my record vs Don this year as 1 win each and 2 draws.

Round 6 Caught me by surprise when Simons much maligned Savoy popped its head up and came up for battle, one I was hoping wouldn’t come my way with 15 battlegroups and even worse 10 Pike and Shot Regiments ouch. Then good terrain on both flanks created a nice whole hole which his army fitted into. Not to refuse a challenge I launched 6 German Horse into an enclosed field to drive of the enemy and then proceed round the flank with Simon advancing on the other , casualties were heavy but I started to roll up the flank as time was called with Simon losing 14 out of 15 and me 10 out of 15 which surprise surprise included all my Swedes. A game I really enjoyed and in a good spirit though less successful for my army.

As again my thanks to everybody and I can’t wait till next year.

Personal thoughts are Britcon was superbly organised and run competition this year the one area I am sure will be up for discussion is the 5 / 6 games and dropping a game personally I feel it should be one or the other without the dropping of a game which I don’t think helped, personally I enjoy 6 games but understand if others prefer 5 but this year I don’t think anybody dropped a game, that said twas a minor issue.

Take Care everybody

Cheers

Alasdair

Ahh well, Alasdair, it looks like Simon's Highlanders took for the hills rather than face you :)

Be keen on a similar report from the List Lurker

I need to look into the scores because I think a couple seem to have been entered wrongly for the last round. Unfortunately I'm working away from home for the next couple of days so it will be later in the week before I can complete this. Then I can make sure everything's OK before sending it to Tim to ensure that the spotty one gets appropriately ranked.

We'll be surveying people to see what you liked or didn't, and I'm know that number of games and dropping scores will be an area for consideration. From our point of view the event went very smoothly with very little hassle and for that the players have to take a lot of the credit.

Firstly big thankyou to tim, Kevin and the invisible helpers... Very enjoyable and well run friendly event...
Secondly, thank you to all my opponents for 6 drummings and enjoyable games with plenty of banter...

Thirdly: I would like to see 6 games again... To come to britcon is quite a £ outlay so i would personally like to max out on games... If it has to go to 5 games can we drop friday night and leave it spare for fun "club night" games ?

Dropping a score was fun... I went from scrapped into double figs to not in double figs :)

PS: the levy army is confined to garrison duty... If there are any manpower left... I left a few dead behind :)

In my initial post, written in a knackered state after our long journey home, I neglected to praise Tim and his team. One of the best ever organised Britcons in my view. It was slick but informal and engendered a real spirit of camaraderie and oneness amongst the players. A really selfless performance from Tim and the team who sacrificed their own gamiing enjoyment in order that the rest of us could have a great experience.
Sorry Tim but I hope you chose to give up your own enjoyment again next year for the benefit of the rest of us.

Must be wrong, possibly reversed, result as it was 17-3 against me!

An excellent weekend despite me taking an 'anti-TYW with Cuirassiers army' and facing 5 foot armies. Wrong choice again and exaggerated by rubbish generalship. My camels only got into combat in one game and almost got wiped out by 1 average unarmoured p/p BG. Anyway, thanks to a very well organised competition by Tim, Kev and the team and of course thanks to all my worthy opponents.

ps wish I had bought Hunter's dice off him after the last game :-)

Cheers

Richard

Another fantastic Britcom, which passed far too quickly.

3 wins, 1 draw, 2 defeats, so not a bad tournament.

Six great games, especially the two 16-9 defeats against Simon's Savoy cabbages and Keith's Swedes (Is that a vegetarian dinner?). Both went right to the wire, piles of dead and high tension, perfect examples of why FOG R is such a good game.
Also thanks to my opponents Ray, Don, Mick and Hunter, who I'm sure was using a dice with six ones on it.

As to dropping a score, it didnt work for me this time. If all six games had counted I would have been 10th, but had to drop 9 points so ended up 18th.

A final thanks to all the organisers who put so much effort in to making it so good for the rest of us.

Matthew
