That includes distance, visibility, arc etc. If you can't see a target it cannot be in shooting range. If a target is out of arc it is not in shooting range.

I think you have taken too narrow a view of 'shooting range'.
Well I think my position is reasonable as the RAW defines 'shooting range' as a quite separate thing to 'arc of fire' etc. RBS has acknowledged that the rule we have been discussing is ambiguous and that he can't recall the original design rationale (fair enough). He has now made a clear post hoc ruling that the commander must be wihin arc of fire as well as shooting range, so the matter is settled.

Now, I wonder if the rule applies when a routing or fragmented battle group moves within shooting range (and arc) of an enrmy commander......
A routing BG can't shoot so hasn't got a shooting range (but could, on the other hand, presumably trample him to death if he is in their path  ). A fragmented battle group can shoot so has got a shooting range.....

Well I gave a clear answer ("You are wrong") several posts ago, from which it should have been apparent that the proposition you were arguing against was right.
While your statement is true, there are now 3 pages in this thread and many people would have to spend a lot of time reading through to figure out your actual meaning. Some would undoubtedly get it wrong. We appreciate the clear concise statement you made subsequently. Thank-you. Your posts help a lot.

Hi All,
I'm back from vacation, and even though I side with Zoltan, RBS has spoken clearly and that's that. I'm not happy with the ability to get an extra move for a Commander using this rule. This is definitely "off" , but could occur unintentionally. Getting back to the start of it all, I now realise we were wrong in our game because it was not BG movement, but a TC move in the JAP that triggered the issue. This was a perfectly legal move despite it placing the TC in the middle of 3 of my Mongol LC BG's(range good but no arc), and it was his turn next, so I could not have done anything about it. But it just didn't look right!!!!
Thankfully the error was not a game result changer.
Thanks for all the input.
A question was asked - I am an Aussie living in Norderstedt, near Hamburg in Germany, and never seem to play enough FoG to fully learn it - but giving it a red hot go. Just thank me in advance for the win and the points if I show up at a tournament.

Cheers Rob - I asked the question just to see if I knew anyone who might be able to assist you locally.

Martin Wirt is in Germany and regularly comes to the UK to play FoG and he's organising next year's Worlds competition in Koblenz - is he anywhere near you?

In addition Rob, you might like to consider joining the Aussie or ANZAC team for the International Team Challenge to be held in Rome late August 2014.

Thanks for the support. I know Martin, he gave me a damned good thrashing at a small tournament in Hamburg a while back, and I am meeting up with him and other again in Berlin soon for another tournament. Some guys are coming from the UK too, but I'll be down the bottom of the draw somewhere. The big thing is I get to play 4 or more games in one weekend. Usually I play once every few weeks with others here in the Hamburg Club. The other issue is I play other things and have only one life with family and other real world distractions like work.........Ho Hum.

If you are talking about the tournament in Berlin on 23rd/24th November then I'm one of the guys from the UK that is going.

That's the one Dave, it'll be good to attach a face to dave_r. My guess is we won't meet over the table. It is a strong field, so I'll be in the lower pairings, unless of course my dice somehow always come up with 5's :!:  :!:
See you there,

In suggesting a new face be attached we're being friendly. We've seen the old one.

We all give Dave a rough time. What you will actually find is Dave Ruddock is the historical basis for Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". He wears his age well.
