With Manstein (nee
Lewinski) and Guderian, I don't think a straight play-through on the Grand Campaign is really practical. The super-strength units and timelines don't mesh with those games. Those levels were added during the development of the "vanilla" (original) Panzer Corps as added challenges. By the time the the GC (East) development began, the devs responded to player feedback and altered turn limits and unit strengths to a more tailored challenge in the common levels (say, Lt. to FM), and only Rommel remained germaine in my mind.
I do think the Rommel level is very useful, as it gives a real challenge to manage upgrades, overstrength, and unit tactics, but you can still win DVs consistently and have that instant gratification. It is entirely possible to play the GC from '39 to '45, without saves/cheats/reloads and achieve DVs consistently in all but a a very, very few scenarios on Rommel. Modlin in '39 and and Oboyan in '43 are the only ones that I can not
consistently get a DV in while playing on Rommel, in all of the various scenarios and years. No reloading, no cheat codes, etc. I certainly can't do that on Lewinski or Guderian. GC West, AK, and AC have proven to also be imminently winnable on Rommel, but it requires work and experience and isn't going to happen for the first time player.
But this is speaking specifically to the desire to win decisively all the way through; if you want a more historic result or steeper challenge, Deducter's mods can give that, or try the other levels and you can scrape out MVs and really feel a different type of challenge. I really do appreciate the various levels of difficulty, both stock, locked, and modded ones, as they keep the game challenging and relevant no matter how experienced you get. While I don't play a super large number of games, you can use them to get more bang for your gaming dollar than with any other game I've encountered! I'm embarrassed to say the many levels have kept me at the game, I'm probably down to $.01 US per hour. Yikes.
