I got a call this morning from my principal. The teacher who was supposed to go up north with her class on Monday can't and they are most likely sending me along with her class (while she stays here with mine). I go up with my class (this is to an Outdoor Ed. Centre for a week) the following week. They are calling me back later today to confirm. The Gauls may have to skulk back to the north and join you all another time. Will let you know when I do! Apologies if I do have to bow out!
ok let us know.

Ricoual74, you can take over from blathergut. read all the postings carefully. You can choose your army and go through the motions. beware you need to play regularly (average of 1 turn a day). let me know if you have questions.

good luck to you blathergut. you'll need it. we'll have you perhaps for the next series.

Deeter, just accepted your challenge on the fourth attempt - kept getting an error message saying it couldn't write the file to the RoamingDatablahblahblah. Appears to have worked now but let me know if it doesn't pop into your box, so to speak.

Four new challenges up for Uheng, Morbio, Blathergut and Fogman.

pw: "getafix"

May the best Gaul win.

Ah Blathergut, that's a real shame we have only just got you back after too long an absence! I guess that means our game will not count in the competition, I shall play from scratch against your replacement. I hope you get chance to finish the game before you go - I like to leave things nice and tidy.

All the best,
Morbio

fogman (pyrrhic) 20/40 vs ulysisgrunt (syracuse) 49/43

a frontal clash against intact pikes is too much for the syracusan spears and gallic swords. syracusan attempts to outflank the pikes line fell short.

batesmotel(Pyrrhus in Italy) 37/39
morbio (Later Carthaginian) 49/44

Pyrrhus pikes were more than a match for anything the Carthaginians but Pyrrhus lesser troops on the left flank crumbled almost as fast as the pikes were winning. On a map with two larges patches of plantation and other terrain (and this is wide open???), the initial maneuvers by both armies ended up in an engagement starting where neither of us really intended it and both of us commented that we feared we had gotten drawn into a fight where we shouldn't have. Overall the game turned into a turning movement for both sides where in the end Pyrrhus was attacking diagonally down from the Carthaginian side of the map and the Carthaginians were attacking up from Pyrrhus side. Fortunately enough fragmented Pyrrhic troops held out long enough to turn it into a marginal Pyrrhic victory rather than the bloody draw it could have easily been.

Morbio, thanks for a great game.

Chris

batesmotel (Pyrrhus in Italy) 3/39
ulysisgrunt (Syracusan) 47/43

Not a good day for the Syracusans as several pieces of their army were defeated in detail while the rest of the HF lined the hill with their camp in order to avoid facing the Pyrrhic pikes on the plain.

Thanks for the game.

Chris

Except for the occasional citizen hoplite that went impetuous and charged off the hill in to the pikes!

lydianed (Galic Early Lowland) 26/44 vs. Ulysisgrunt (Syracusans) 45/43

Open but undulating map with some low rises which the gauls took advantage of. Gallic chariots and HF and uphill terrain proved too much for syracusans who couldn't maintain an unbroken line. Once the cracks appeared the descent was pretty rapid. Thanks for the game.

The Syracusans put up a surprisingly stiff resistance to the Roman invaders. Although the Romans were victorious they had heavy casualties, particularly among the elite legionaries.
Syracusan losses were 100%; The Romans lost 33 out of 40 points.
