When they were on Read Street?
Hi Marty, I started playing AH games in the early '80s, so by that time they were at the Harford Road location. That was also where I briefly worked for them.
I know that location too. I use to go to Read Street on Saturdays as I lived about 4 blocks from it. Kind of neat seeing the games in development.

Avalon Hill's Midway on the Commodore 64.

Started war boardgames in 1969 with AH's original Gettysburg. Through 1970 to early 1980's a whole host of offerings from SPI,AH,VG etc. Many call that time the Golden Age of wargaming and for me it was. My favorites were the monster games. War in Europe, Drang, Wacht, Atlantic Wall.

First serious computer game was Second Front which was the original name for Grigsby's War in the East. Then Panzer General was released. And here I am. :D

Sea Battle and B-52 bomber on intellivision plus tanks, unless you want to go back to Astroids and Star wars on Arcade games.

Mine was probably (not 100% sure) Steel Panthers. At least for pure strategy games.

Lets see, started with the Milton Bradley Heritage Series in the early 60s (Dogfight, Broadside, Civil War (have copies of these still) and then went to the AH games starting in the mid-sixties (Blitzkrieg, Afrika Corps (yep have these too) etc.) Can't remember the 1st computer wargames but they were in the mid 80s on a Commodore 64. I remember some naval ones. bounced back and forth from then on.

Only thing that hasn't changed is I am still not any good at them but win or lose they are fun,

Why don't you use an emulation software?
I've Amigar Forever, and once in a while I like to run it, and "bring back" Amiga to life.

I'm not sure if they are really abandonware, Nico.
Anyway GoG have a package called "Battle Isle Platinium" with History Line included, and they run in Windows 7.

Wargame construction set for Commodore 64 : http://www.c64sets.com/wargame_construction_set.html
In my young mind I imagined tha my bedroom was a world, with every furniture ( the bed, the carpet, the desk etc etc) was a nation, with its politics and army. And I used WcS to create the battles between these nations... it was perfect, you could recreate every kind of battle with every kind of terrain or units..
And then they say that computers kills imagination...

Dogfight board game was a favorite as was RISK, but Armor Battle on the first Generation Mattel Intellivision was my first "computer" game of sorts for wargames. Still have some old game cartridges with saved games on them.

Before that I remember playing Pong Tennis at a hotel on Kuai Island in Hawaii for hours.

Sometimes??!!! I'll miss her forever!
flakfernrohr wrote:Dogfight board game was a favorite as was RISK ...
The best ever Risk game for a computer, in my personal opinion, was Amiga Risk. It could be played hot-seat by 5 players at a time. The best option was to play with each player receiving a secret objective (eg. conquer 2 continents or a number of states), assigned by the game. I still remember a classic game involving 5 players. 1 player became dominant and proceeded to dispatch us one by one. The other 4 were all doomed as the winning player (Player A) started on the dreaded "blitz" to finish us all off. Player E then helpfully suggested to A to bump off a state on his route to victory. Player A did so unthinkingly and we all really shocked (except for E, of course) when the Victory End Screen appeared. Player E won, as Player A had unwittingly helped him accomplish his secret mission (to dispatch that state). Talk about snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Player A was annoyed as hell as I couldn't stop laughing.
