Although I was far from as confident as I should his, I beat the great Alexstandish 10-28 (he would have likely reached a worse result due to quantity of fragmentation and my holding of the flanks I suppose).

FRANCS v. VISIGOTHS 10-28

Never forget that Frankish cavalry is very fond of Berries - and good game sir.

Triarii Andalusian 756-1049 with Spanish 900
defeats
Stones1985 Arab (Umayyad) 685 to 750 AD

Score 13-52

Only a victory because woods hid a large Andalusian missile force that eventually and with difficulty shot the Arabs of an important hill and flanked the Arab spears. Very close until the final collapse.

Hard fight, especially with those vet spearmen, in which the earlier Arab army was ahead for quite some time. GG.

by Chris Townsend
Division C

Chris Townsend decided that his Spanish 900 and Andalusian allies would meet SirMichael's German 888 in Germany, as there were too many tourists in Spain.

The German's provided a very warm welcome charging down from their hills to meet the Spanish shield wall that had been established between two woods and behind a shallow stream. Some of the German infantry broke through in the gap between the Spanish and their allies, but the German cavalry was unable to support, so, while the line disintegrated into individual melees, the damage was "contained". Light troops and bowmen from both sides disputed a marsh on the Spanish right with a narrow edge in the missile fire to the Spanish after the German support troops were distracted by Spanish cavalry emerging from the woods. This too turned into a battle of attrition, with the German flank defenders aided by their hills. A similar story developed on the Spanish left, without the marsh, with a very chaotic result making it hard to call either side the winner.

In the end, the Spanish manged to get enough of an edge in enough of the little battles to be able to take an extended stay in Germany, in order to recover from the exhausting battle.

Chris Townsend's Spanish 900 and Andalusian allies defeated SirMichael's German 888 by 64 to 50.

Triarii Andalusian 756-1049 with Spanish 900
defeats
markleslie Khorasanian 821-1003 AD with Dailami
score 17-45

A lot of movement before both forces came to grips.
Masterly protection of Khorasanian elephants allowed them to avoid the Andalusian missile troops and punch a hole in the Andalusian right trampling the Andalusian General who fell off his pony early on. But then the elephants turned left away from the Andalusian centre. Meanwhile the Khorasanian impact Dailami, some with the edge taken off by missile fire, did not have good first charges and were then ground down by the mostly Andalusian veteran spears. The collapse at the end was sudden, just after the elephants wrong turn and only 3 turns from nightfall; two Andalusian units had the cheek to rally at the very death. A very tough close game and definite lessons from my opponent in moving pachyderms.

We had a bit of a mix up and when the tournament first started my army was listed as Frankish, instead of Byzantine. This battle was already underway when the confusion was taken care of; so we decided to finish up that battle and post results.

rpadilla1988 (Frankish 751-887) defeats Alexstandish (Visigoths 419-621) 26-54

It was a battle to the nitty gritty, with a large river cutting off the map to Frank right flank. The franks used this river as an anchor point for a large body of spear units extending far to the right. And behind the main body of spearmen on the right flank were cav. The Visigoths brought with them large numbers of noble lancers and warbands. Using skirmishers as screening units the Franks were able to grind some numbers down and close the distance.

GG Alexstandish!

Div A

Morat (Frankish) defeated (technically) Garokan (German) 61-55

Horrible terrain dominated by broken hilly ground. Franks manoeuvred to strike at the German right: leaving forces to delay the German left. Very nearly worked to secure an early victory: but the Germans rallied - leading to an incredibly close battle which the Franks only just got over the line on.

Thanks to Garokan for the game.

Div C

excubitor (Byzantine 600-649 AD) - vs - Chris Townsend [Spanish (900-1049) with Andalusian (756-1049) allies]

excubitor won: 62-51

The Byzantine army entered the fight with a slight advantage due to the terrain and their numerous cavalry. The Spanish reformed and withdrew the core of their cavalry to their right, setting up a defensive line on an easy-to-defend hill to their center. The Byzantine attack on the left of the Spanish started well, but the Spanish surprised them as they had hidden troops in the woods. Ultimately, the Spanish prevailed on their left, but they did not manage to capitalize on their success as their cavalry was engaged in pursuing the fleeing Byzantines. On the rest of the frontline, the Byzantines tried to wear down the Spanish lines, using their superior numbers in missile units. Then the Spanish attacked, and their cavalry on their right seemed to have the upper hand against an equal number of Byzantine cavalry units. As a Spanish infantry unit broke the Byzantine line and moved to support their cavalry, the situation seemed doomed for the Byzantines. Yet, quite unexpectedly, not only did they fail to disrupt the already engaged Byzantine cavalry, but they were rooted themselves. Victory seemed to change hands turn by turn. Finally, the Byzantines managed to prevail thanks to the outstanding performance of two of their units. A Heavy infantry unit led by a Byzantine General managed to repel waves of Spanish infantry and cavalry attacks in the center, ultimately rooting them all. Quite remarkably, another Byzantine unit of massed archers managed to withstand more than 4 cavalry charges - even disordering some of the light cav units!
This was a great game where Byzantines managed to win thanks to a few (though critical), lucky dice rolls.

Apologies for my tardiness, this finished on the 29th of July.

Division A

markleslie Khorasanian 821-1003 AD with Dailami 928-1055 AD defeats frederic02 Byzantines 963-984 AD 52-27.

Turn 2 the stage is set and the Byzantines came well supplied with arrows and seemed eager to share.

Once again the Khorasanians had to grit their teeth and march across the wide open plain into the storm coping as much flak as you would expect from such an approach.
Image

It was a tough slog for the Dailami foot against the Byzantine Skoutatoi, too often our boys were ineffective on impact and had to suffer in a losing melee. Thankfully our mounted proved a little more effective coming in from all angles and our elephants were an ongoing disruption for the Byzantine lancers.
Image

In the end carnage and mayhem, none survived unscathed.

Salute!
