Assyrians attack Egyptian-allied Syria

The Assyrians defeated the Syrians 63-41.

A large steep hill dominated the far left and a smaller medium hill looked over about the middle of the field. A small pond on the right helped shield the central hill's right flank.

We deployed most of our light foot offset to our left to contest the steep hill. Our medium foot deployed in a block to storm the central hill with chariots covering both flanks.

The Syrians had a large chariot force on our right. A block of mixed medium foot in the center supported by a few chariots and screened by a few light foot.

Our massed lights drove off one or two opposing lights who briefly contested the steep hill on our left. They then descended to the lower slopes and began peppering the Syrian chariots which advanced to drive in the lights screening our center. Our medium foot took possession of the central hill and one group of our chariots anchored the line from there to the steep hill. Both groups joined our lights in showering the opposing chariots with arrows, disrupting a number of these fairly quickly. We redeployed our chariots on our right with half moving to support the left flank and half taking up positions along the slopes of the central hill to cover the flanks of our infantry. Most of the Syrian chariots on our right turned to skirmish with our foot on the central hill, but a couple probed the flank and tangled with our own chariots there.

With a number of Syrian chariots in the center fragmented by archery, we unleashed our chariots and foot, breaking and driving off these and neighbors and touching off a rather chaotic melee between surviving chariots and supporting infantry. Some of our units overpursued and were in turn flanked and broken, but we shot up or ground down enough to see off the Syrians after a hard fight scattered over the entire field.

Egyptians beat Assyrian-allied Nabatea, 49 to 21

The Egyptian punitive expedition returned to the Nile with vast amounts of gold, perfumes, silver, and Nabataean incense and they destroyed the pirate fleet that operated in the Red Sea.

The Nabataeans formed their archers and foot troops along a high hill, well away from the Egyptian army, while they harassed the Egyptian chariots with light infantry on both flanks. While the bulk of the Egyptian army maneuvered to attack the Nabataean defensive position on its weakest and most accessible flank, the Egyptian chariots attacked the Nabatean light infantry. When the Nabataean light infantry were no longer a nuisance, the bulk of the Egyptian army charged the Nabataean defensive positions on the right flank, gradually wiping out their infantry and archer formations. A Nabataean chariot force attempted an encirclement maneuver but by the time it arrived, the rest of the Nabataean army was lost. The Egyptian infantry had hardly any casualties, since most of these were taken by the Egyptian chariots.

Egyptians beat Assyrian-allied Blemmya, 62 to 35

The second punitive expedition launched by the pharaoh was also a success. The Blemmya tribes were defeated and with it, the trade routes with the far punt secured.

The Blemmya barbarians fortified themselves in an ancient Egyptian farm field, surrounded by obstacles and large hills where they fortified themselves, while they sent light infantry to harass the Egyptian army on the flanks. First, the Egyptian chariots and a smaller number of cavalry attacked and drove back the Blemmya light infantry. Meanwhile, the pharaoh's infantry and archers occupied a promontory in the center of the battlefield, awaiting their moment. To avoid being greeted with waves of arrows, the Egyptians sent the chariots to encircle the Blemmyan army in a wasting maneuver that resulted in stalling several archery units. Once the strategy worked, but not before losing a large number of chariots, the Egyptian infantry advanced and charged the tribal infantry supported by archers. The difference in weaponry and in the quality of the units made the difference and the Blemmya tribal warriors could not resist the Egyptian onslaught.

Hittite rebels repelled their overlords 45-17.

The rebels superior numbers of infantry swarmed over and around a chain of steep hills dominating the center of the field supported by their chariots which made a long flanking march around the right. The more massive enemy chariot wing massed on our left, unable to attack up the steep slopes, was reduced to a little shooting support while their infantry was eventually overwhelmed.

How are the battles going? I think there is only one left to solve, right?

The traitorous Hurrians made their stand atop a hill overlooking farmland, hoping to provoke the Hittites into a foolhardy charge akin to their notorious defeat in Syria years prior - but the bitter lessons of that defeat were well used. Hittite chariots skirmished with the hill's defenders, and archers positioned to ambush those attempting the climb, feigning another reckless approach, but on the opposite wing, screened from sight by woods, the bulk of the Hittite infantry marched on a slope defended primarily by light forces, who proved unable to deter their advance. The inscribed histories would not record the valor of the Gasgan mercenaries who led the Hittite columns, nor the heavy casualties that they suffered, but rather that the Hurrian archers, filled with false pride at the effect of their volleys on the diversionary force were soon filled with terror as heavy forces closed in behind them, leaving no escape as the king himself rode his chariot upon them, slaying many rebels.

A first victory for the Hittites, hopefully one that will stem the bleeding a tad.

Gasgan - Mycenean game is still very early stages, lights only just made contact on the last turn I did.

There are a handful of turns left in the Sherden invasion. I'm suspecting this will end in a draw.

After a log battle the Sherden horde invading Nabatea, beat the Syro-Canaanite army. 45 - 19
The Nabateans chose a strategy leaving the heavy infantry defending a High position meanwhile the rest of the army, particularly the chariots, tried to surround the sherden. Finally , after a long pursuit, the sherden managed to defeat the Nabateans chariots and win the battle.

The contest between the Hittite and Assyrian empires for control of southern Anatolia swung back and forth. Its expedition into its faithless formal vassal in Hurria was a success, but the rebel tribes of Kizzuwatna defied the army sent forth from Hattusha to crush them. Meanwhile, word reached the Hittites that a migration of Zagros highlanders towards Mesopotamia was seeking their recognition, as the Assyrian king would likely be their primary adversary.

The Sherden horde swept into Nabatea and defeated the army that the local city-states, aided by Assyria, had gathered to defend them. They inherited a devastated province, however, as both their own invasion and a punitive force sent by Egypt had smashed the intricate systems of dams that allowed the Nabateans to farm their arid land. The presence of a new power in the region however drew the attention of dissidents in other lands. Syria, pinched between Assyrian king and Egyptian pharaoh, sent envoys to the new lords of Nabatea alongside a rebel faction in Hurria that had had enough of both Hattusha and Ninevah.

Egypt's victories against the Nabateans and Blemmyans also attracted the notice of various minor states, as always trying to thread the line between submission to a hegemon and being left without any sort of protector. The tribes of Kashkia decided that they preferred the support of a distant Pharaoh to the all-to-close presence of either the Gasgans or the Hittites. Likewise, the city of Athens in Greece, chafing at having to defer to the mad Spartan king, dispatched a shipload of their finest oil as tribute to great Egyptian monarch.

Sparta continued its proxy war with the Gasgan kingdom across the Aegean in ruined Troy. A Gasgan raid into Thrace was repulsed, but a Gasgan-allied Libyan tribe displaced its adversary in Cyrenaica, that despite the indifference of the Mad King Glados towards its envoys, had been perceived as pro-Spartan. Meanwhile, the ongoing harsh winters triggered a new migration in Thrace, which despite the province's recent tussles with the Gasgans set its eyes on Spartan lands as a likely place to settle.
