FOG2 Ancients and P&S use the "legacy" PBEM2/PBEM3 server, whereas FOG2 Medieval uses the native PBEM3 server.
It is likely that the former is/was down, and the latter not.

me too! had a bit of trouble over the last couple of days, but got in eventually, now no luck for a an hour or so

The site was "up" an hour ago - 19:00 but is now down again 20:15
