I am still game but just worked out a Thracian list and set up against a later hoplite. Then a class indian vs alex mac. I hope you realise that there will be no flanks to whip around in these games. Thing is I would like the double moves, not fussy about FOW. Stll find FOW a bit perplexing when you can not see certain troops and yet there is nothing blocking your vision or not being able to see ellies behind troops (unless theya re so well trained they will be crawling).
I'd advise evrybody to check it out ie fielding their amy vs a possible opponent, OK I know you will already do it just to get the feel and yes youwill be JUST deploying agst the computer but, oh once more for flank marches. The maps I had a look at were predominantly open, I mean hardly any rough or difficult terrain around?
Sorry on second thoughts I would prefer double moves please, if I am the only one for this so be it, if that is the case I will prob go for the not so classy, classical Indians or maybe the Hops, possibly barley, malt. Thracians double moves, Classical Indians no double moves.

andersm73 wrote:Hi hidde, yes I'm afraid only the Classical Indian list is allowed as it's the only Indian list that's given a contemporary time frame with Alexander. Also want to keep the lists availabe fairly restricted as theirs a host of others that could be included i:e Illyrians, Spartans etc etc, so just the lists I specified above for this one please.
Matt
I had assumed that we would be able to use any allies listed for our respective armies. Is that correct?

1) ericdoman1 - Medieval Irish (Early) vs pantherboy - Later Scots Isles and Highlands
2) TheGrayMouser - Medieval German (Early) vs Triarius - Anglo Irish (Later)
Good luck to all.
cheers
Matt
Triarius - Anglo Irish (Later) 53/61 Win
vs
TheGrayMouser - Medieval German (Early) 53/53
The game became cat (grey?) and mouse (Irish) in and out of the, central, impassable terrain and bogs while German cavalry and Irish allies raced for the back door on opposite flanks.
Too many stubborn kerns in bogs held up the German cav while the German back yard was eventually ransacked by the Irish allies.
Terrain and good luck both smiled on the Irish!
Thanks very much GM a very good game.

I take Alexandrian Macedonian.
My vote is on 750pts so we get the bigger maps. Like davouthojo I've gotten used to both DM & FOW so my vote is for.

I've changed my mind - I will go with Alexandrian Macedonians. I vote for DM and FOW. The idea of larger maps appeals but I'm undecided about the larger size armies so will abstain on that.

If FOW and double moves Thracian. If no double moves Classical Indian. My final typed word, maybe?

Hi Ironclad, yes any allies specified in the allowed lists are ok, so you can take a Spartan ally option in the Later Hoplite Greek list but you can't actually use the seperate Spartan list. Have you down for Alexandrian Macedonian now though.

750pts

Hi Matt and all
Not sure about 750 points. Even if the map is larger as compared to a 500 pt game, the ratio between size of map and additional points means that you can forget flanks. Tested it nearly a dozen times now and the maps are generally qute open, moreso than at 700pts or less.
Had a practice game ve TGM, he was using Skythian and I was using Thracian. There is no way he can outflank me, a hoplite army can go wall to wall and more. Anybody looking at using the skythians or LAPs are going to have a torrid time and prob be chased off the map, as I did with TGM's Skythians.
As boring as it may be I would recommend 500pts but then the pendulum swings in favour of mounted armies. Yes strange you may say less ponts and a smaller map. I would advise all to check out 750pt map, 10 times and see what I mean. Just work out a quick 750pt army eg Later hops, new game, close game etc.

Well, i havent had time to check out the maps as thourouhly as Eric but from what I have seen I agree
Here is a possible solution:
We will use 750 ap armies per the dag to get the bigger maps, howver players will only PURCHASE 600 / 650 ap's worth of troops (whatever is decided)
That way we get the larger armies and break the doldrums of 500 ap games, but get the bigger maps to allow more elbow room. (assuming the program doesnt pick maps on the actual $ap spent vs army chosen.....)
Would of course require a little trust between players but it works in campaign games so why not in a league?

I was considering an Alexander the Great tourney, allowing only Later Hoplite Greek - Alexandrian Macedonian - Thracian - Later Achaemenid Persian - Skythian and Classical Indian armies, perhaps with only the Alexandrian Macedonian players allowed to take an Inspired General, representing Alexander.
Any thoughts on this and would anyone be interested?

Is this tourney limited to IF lists? I'm assuming yes, but I thought I'd ask before it is too late

Yes, for lack of a better term I guess you would call it a themed tourney.
Hope you decide to pick up IF so you can slap me around with succesor Selucs instead od the same old ROR pre 166 species

TGM's idea

I'd like to second TGM's idea of choosing 750 pts but only work out an army of 600pts, as he has mentioned we will have to trust one another. Maybe switch FOW off so you can count the points?
The major reasons are, lack of space and probably making players use more options. If you stick to 750pts on a 750 pt map. Well it's going to be hops vs Alex Mac.
Matt might be worth opening a seperate link for this themed tournament?
Cheers

Hi All
So far we have potentially twelve players signed up, Stilicho has shown an interest in playing Classical Indian but hasn't posted his preferences to this thread yet. So we still need four more to get the ball rolling.
750pts with FOW and DM on is the most popular option so far but their seems to be some problems with map size being too restricted... I'd suggest we try 650pt games out and see how that would be?? Playing games with a larger points total and only taking a proportion of those points seems a tad complex and theirs no way to monitor players are taking the appropriate amount of points, would prefer to keep it simple and just use a set points total but if players wish to use this mode then I'll go with the flow...
Otherwise we may just be best off with the tried and tested 500pt or 600pt games.
cheers

I'll play - and I'll use whoever I'm told to. Classical Indian is fine, or someone else.
