In 1958, a secret Soviet project to create a cyborg robot was launched. The scientific adviser was Nobel Prize winner V. Manuilov. In addition to the designers, doctors and engineers were also involved in the robot’s construction. For reasons of human safety, mice, rats and dogs were used for the experiments (monkeys were ruled out as they are too boisterous, and it was decided to use a dog).

During the experiment, the head was successfully connected to a life-support system fitted with a blood-circulation pump. This was a mechanical robot with a living organism inside. The first subject was a dog named Collie (hence the project’s name).

The dog was controlled using a short-wave remote control.

The project ran for almost 10 years. However, unexpectedly (by a decree of the Central Committee dated 4 January 1969), the ‘Collie’ project was terminated, and the information was classified as top secret... It was not until 1991 that all data relating to the ‘COLLY’ project was allegedly declassified. Or, to be more precise, most of it. Whether this was done deliberately or whether there was a leak is unknown, as is whether the project was successful. Similarly, the documents make no mention of whether or not a human was used in the project over the course of those 10 years.
