A well fought Abassid family feud (including spinning wheel and random questions) has resulted in .......

macsen 26/38 defeating keyth 37/32.

no camps looted (I was working on it) abd I think Keyth lost a commander of some sort, I dare say he knows what.

Thanks for the game.

I just had a quick headcount and all commanders present and correct. Useless, but present and correct. I still can't believe those last two turns....

batesmotel (Achaian Greek mercs) 42/49
keyth (Arab Conquest -later) 44/40

No commanders or camps were harmed in the filming of this Kreten defeat ;-). The map with the tropical river through the desert proved the right way to neutralize the superior Arab Offensive spears. These quickly became spread out and together with the inhospitable terrain weren't very effective in the battle.

"With regard to points, my one concern is that some armies just don't work much under 400 points"

Hmm... is that true? I'm not sure - I've played many games with 300/350 and have not noticed this - but by no means all, of course. I suppose all AP amounts might slightly favour some armies over others...

Turk, and phlewis - just out of curiosity, have you played many games at say 300 AP? Just that the most common response to the games at 300 APs has been players saying they were surprised at how different they are. It's always nice to buy a bunch of Elite HA knights, which one can do in the higher AP games - but in the more open games a single Elite unit can win a battle! Maybe we could all play some friendlies at 300 and see how we like it? I'm open to challenges!

Another advantage is the games are over quicker, allowing the campaign to be played at a fast tempo. Also, a bunch of different maps.

I don't think there are many, if any, armies that don't work at 300-400 points. There are armies with lots of different goodies that may work better at higher totals, e.g. Later Seleucids, but I don't think there are any that are crippled at the low end, just that they force you to make more choices.

400 I like. I have tried some 300 games recently and they just feel lacking something.

Yes i have played numerous small pt armies even 200pts which are a real challange! The Norm apears to be 400-500 pt armies and most seem to be happy with that.If you go for 300 pt terrain may determin the winner from the start so Yes ive played smaller games and the Skill level is enhanced but if you get a run of unlucky rolls then you are in trouble.

Aristides why are you so pro small armies anyway ?

In that particular game, yes :)

Though AP totals have little impact on my ability to lose a game ;)

The Kretan shores are washed again with the blood of foreign mercenaries...

iandavidsmith (Cilician Armenian) 37/36
keyth (Arab Conquest) 13/40

The invaders lost a commander and their camp.

Tough, tough game for Ian. In the end, terrain worked hugely in my favour, as did a lucky deployment. Ian was unable to unleash his knights while his average spears had to face up to the superior Arab horde, and the Ilkhanid allies tangled with Jund lancers. Had the knights broken loose it would have been a very different result.

Well, it's partly variety - playing so many league games at 500 pts i really enjoy the change to battles with a larger scale. Also, i just think they're under-rated and are in many ways more skill-oriented (more especially skill in 'strategy' rather than just tactical knowhow).

Diced to death! :) My camp was looted and I lost an FC. I could only see two of your commanders at the end, was one killed or retreated?

You had some great dice yourself! That or my guys had super-hayfever in those fields!

(Would be great if the dice were recorded in a file somewhere - what % of the games we lose do we assign to bad dice, I wonder, as a group, rather than opponents' play or our own mistakes?)

No, my commanders were intact!

I took the field.

Cool. I would love a log file for the same reasons :)

I inadvertently used an IC twice this season, only to have it pointed out this was now allowed to me anyway. But I may well have used more than 1 ic in previous seasons when i played more than one game (i generally speaking always take one in all games, bar some large-scale battles) - I say this because unitl this recent oversight was pointed out to me, i had completely forgotten the rule.

I'm wonderng what the group thinks would be the best course of action (and also whether i am the only one to have forgotten ths rule)...

Well Aristides has 3 counts of over-IC as does macsen (from the first season). Simplest course of action from a scoring point of view is to dock 30 points, as we can't really tell what impact the IC had on the result.
